take care out wide
gday had an interesting day a few weeks ago firstly given all the ocean to find a group of five boats drifting over the same area on the edge of the shelf my friend and I in a 19ft tinny were quiet concerned when a larger vessel,i,ll go as far as saying it,s first name was excallabar or something pretty close to that name came very close to having a midship collision, even though there were 5 people on this boat all concentrating on 1 person who had hooked up I would like to add a very small piece of advice, there was only 2 on my boat and as designated skipper my firstresponsibility was to make sure of our drifting line up and where our other fishing companions were,i have done the rotto channel swim twice but don't think I could do quadripple it in one afternoon, and was also wondering what is the gentleman,s rule on diving at the fad,s as far as approaching with care to get the skippers attention or do you just throw your lures out and hope for the best, interesed to hear your feed back, cheers and keep it safe out wide....

Unless anchored a vessel must
Unless anchored a vessel must maintain a watch for other vessels and be able and prepared to manoeuvre to avoid collisions. Even if you have right of way you must avoid a collision.
These are laws not gentleman's agreements. :)

Prevention of collisions at sea Rule 8
If all else appears to have failed to attract the attention of the large vessel approaching you and posing a threat to your safety and life you should take any action that you consider will attract the offending vessels attention to the imminent dangerous situation.
My solution, a rocket flare fired at a low angle at the bridge of the approaching vessel.
I shit you not.
The dangerous fool in charge of the approaching vessel is a direct threat to the life of your passengers and yourself.
The impact of a rocket flare on the bridge will most certainly get his attention, hopefully before it's to late.
Now before all the arm chair skippers get on their high horse and say what am I talking about, let me say this read rule 8, it doesn't say shoot a flare at the approaching ship. It certainly says get the attention of the other vessel, if you have tried all other passive means and your life and the life of your passengers are in imminent danger everything is on the table and I mean everything period.
This is not a rant it is my view of what action I will take if put in a situation whereby a fool puts my life and others in danger.
To coin a phrase, I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
No apologies to those that maybe offended by such a harsh view on the matter of collisions at sea.

yep it certainly is an
yep it certainly is an option (a bit extreme in this case maybe), and one that gets used on occasion by survey vessels up north to get the attention of bulkies who dont deviate though normally they use white flares so its not mistaken for a distress flare.
Cant be sure due to the way its written, but sounds a bit like both boats were drifting (he was fighting a fish?) and fishing so if one wanted to get technical he could run up the correct day shape (can be a basket) in which case EVERY vessel other than "restricted manouverability" has to stay out of the way.
Personally though if I was drifting near another boat and they were fighting a big fish, Id stay out of the way out of courtesy.
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

I would hope that in the time it took to get your flares up and ready you would be able to take evasive action with your own vessel. I would cut my anchor line before I fired a flare in the direction of another boat.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?
