id say more than likely... tailor always hit the tail first when ambushing their prey. Decent size tailor too by the size of the bite :)

Chris,
I've got a Wenger (from All Boats) with a 30cm blades and rounded tip which I've sharpened. Works a treat

yea id say so, i reckon even the small sharks pretty much smash a whole herring, while tailor will do exactly that, tail it. always seems to happen to my live baits missing the hook completely lol

I agree with the others, Tailor.

Chris, try out the Kershaw 23cm filleting knife (1259X). The blade is 23cm long (obviously) & made of 420J2 stainless. Holds an edge really well & has a very comfortable non-slip grip. Best filleting knife I've ever had. You should be able to get one for the $50-$60 mark.

Had exactly the same thing happen to me last Sat night.

Thu, 2011-12-15 15:54

Had a fresh (but dead) whiting out hoping for something big to come along. Reeled it in 1 hour later and it was missing the whole back end, with clear round bite mark. Only missed the back hook by a few cm (dam it).

Use two snelled hooks and attach the second one to the tail with a small elastic band, helps to improve hook-ups.

Agreed with the rest, Mostly likely tailor, even on lures they almost always got hooked on tail treble, when they turn to swim away, then the front n belly trebles hook'em on the gills and torso.
