*sweetlip

When in Shark Bay last year, camping up near cape peron I was snorkelling around some reef with a gidgee and saw what looked liked spangled emperor.

There was quite a few in schools of around a dozen-20, mostly pretty small but i followed them around and speared one that was about 1kilo. It was similar to the one in the image below, but was a real brassy color all over, almost olivey, no splotches or anything, and I think it had very minor colour around the eyes (going off memory here). Inside the mouth was orangey.

Anyway i was quite proud of myself until my dad told me it was some kind of crap not good eating emperor, so we ended up using it for bait :s

Been bugging me for a while and i cant seem to find any good ID/pictures of one, maybe because they arent a target species? Does anyone know of or have seen such a fish?

If the fish in question is the one in your picture then your old man is wrong...... that is a Blue Lined Emporer which is also known as a Black Snapper.

Good to eat

But if it was an emporer of almost any discription he is wrong. They are almost all good or great to eat. Just under the 5* fish.

Looked like this with red/orange throat could = Red throat emporer, and great to eat.

Cheers

As i said, no blotches just a uniform bronze colour (slightly lighter below). Ive looked through fishwreckapedia (hence where i got the image) and none of them matched up. The one in the pic is just closest body shape from memory.

the old man was a professional fisherman for 30 odd years, from albany to kalbarri, and loves eating fish, so I dont think he woulda dismissed it if he wasnt pretty certain.

Just came across this while looking on the brag board, the fish actually looked similar to this but bronze color, might not even be an Emperor? i dunno. Shame i didnt get a picture haha

Painted sweetlip

The one pictured is a painted sweetlip, not in the emperor family and is not very good eating , so your old man is spot on.

I've found that nearly all of the emperors are top notch or close to it in eating quality, IMO on a par with dhufish which is vastly over rated.

Aha, thanks carnarvonite, following that lead i think it was a gold spot sweetlip.

Goldspotted Sweetlips, Plectorhinchus flavomaculatus

Has that bronzey colour that i remember. Bit off the mark thinking emperor though, doh!
