Swan river fishing

 Hi All,

Ive been out a few times in the river this week for just anything mainly trying to get a tailor, but out of all the times i went i caught absolutely nothing after all up about 15hrs of fishing combined, i was using lures the whole time is there anything that i could do to improve my chances?. Ive been fishing around and at point walter.

Thanks Alex.

Are you keeping a sharp lookout

Don't forget to keep a sharp lookout for birds feeding , it doesn't have to a great size flock of them may be just a couple diving down and cleaning up on the left overs from tailer attacks on bait fish.

walk to the end of the sand spit and cast toward the marker poles with 20gm twisties , there is usually always tailoer and herring on the edge of the channel there.

Where have you been fishing?

Where have you been fishing? The river is hit and miss depending on where you are fishing.

 If fishing the sand spit,

If fishing the sand spit, watch what the current is doing, its normally pretty strong down that way. With strong currents you will normally get pockets of slack water or water moving opposite to the current. This is  normally were the bait fish will hold, and where the tailor and flatties will ambush. But in general that place is difficult to fish with artificials if just starting out. Blade style lures are good.

 When targetting tailor in

Tue, 2018-01-23 20:26

When targetting tailor in the river i look for contours and markers i can aim to with ganged mulies slightly weighted or twistys.  Lately i have cleaned up with twisty at night from semi-illuminated areas, although in dark areas a slowish retrieve ganged mulies work great and i like to snip the tails off to minimize baitspin and i believe a tailor sees this as a missed opportunity by a fellow fish and they commit hard.  Maybe more stink released but it has worked for me. Also those 5 packs of lumo minnows on ebay for 2 bucks work dynamite in the lower reaches. Good luck mate

 If you're predominantly

If you're predominantly fishing Pt Walter, try using small poppers and stick baits.

I've been going early mornings searching for for YFW with no luck, but choppers put in a good chase and will almost certainly hit whatever lure you're using.

You'll find them wherever the terns are diving, or the mullet are jumping.
