i use
4-6 lb braid, and 6-8lb leader
you don't really need anything much more than that

What scano said
covers the question perfectly. Anything heavier would cause issues with casting distance etc and not necessary

in addition make sure you
in addition make sure you have good wading shoes too.
Take your time wading, especially if you step on a crab.... not a good feeling.
in addition to Jackfrost's post, or an alternative have a light snap swivel or snap clip to easily change lures.

I fish from my Finn's dinghy but when I jump out to chase crabs I always get savaged by the 4 or 5 waiting under the sand nearby and the buggers have gone for my calves before

LOL
If you wade for crabs dont walk fast. If you step on a crab try to prevent the reflex action of lifting your foot fast. This creates a "sort off" vacium that sucks the crab up in the water level hence why your calves get "attacked".
In future keep the crab under your foot, have the scoop ready, and as soon as you lift your foot scoop there, and you save a bite and have a crab to boot.
Always piss myself at the antics of crabbers when they step on one.
Funny story. A mate and his German wife came down for a visit when we were crabbing in Peel. They initially werent interested in crabbing and sat on the shore. The next time I saw them was when they waded out to us about 300m in from shore. All hell broke out when she stepped on a crab. AND then I realised that neither off them had shoes on. To top this off neither are in the "I'll carry you to shore" size bracket, and the boat that we were also crabbing from couldnt get to us to rescue them because of the depth.
Escorting them back to shore was one of the funniest things ever because now every little rock etc had both leaping out of the water. And both were savaged by crabs on the toes. Needles to say they have been down again, but dont mention crabbing to them!!

Haha. Kinda like my Wife the first time I took her crabbing at Daweville, her screams would have been heard at Ravenswood and she had booties on and we were a good 200-300m from shore.
I have a slightly novel way of crabbing. I've built a casting deck and stand at the front of the dinghy and my brother and I spot for the bigger crabs, when we see one I chase them and manouvre the dinghy around them and then one of us leaps out and chases them down on foot and catches them. It is the chasing them down bit that gets us savaged. Pretty much the best fun you can have crabbing though and all you'll hear is us laughing the whole time.
