Super SARCA anchor - best anchor??
Submitted by JW on Mon, 2013-11-11 22:20
Needs some advice pls.
I have a 6.7m ali boat. It has the traditional "plow" anchor. I find it hard to use as it does not bite down fast and tends to just drag on its side.
I have been told to get a Super Sarca No 3.
Any advice to the best all rounder anchor?
Cheers,
JW

Got one of the original
Got one of the original Galvanised SARCAs for my 5.8m ally and it works fantastic. I can only imagine the newer ones work just as good if not better. Interesting looking at the Rocna Anchors too though.
Comparison vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xM_i4w8eqTw
Though you can see when they pull the SARCA anchor they do it faster than when they pull the Rocna, so maybe a bit 'setup'.
Another vid of the Rocna shows how its 'inferior' to the Mantus apparently

Though in this test having the chains elevated and not pulling the anchors with the chain laying flat on the ground could be favouring the result. Watching these Vids I think one can safely say each company is going to perform tests on their own anchors and competitors in a way that shows their anchor to be the best one, so I wouldn't believe all what you see in the video 'comparsions'
Either way I think in a real world purpose both a Rocna or a SARCA would suit your boat fine, just get the correct size/weight one.

Have had sarcas on two
Have had sarcas on two previous boats and never had any issues with them and talking to relatives from the eastern states they are widely used in Victoria by various fishermen as a trusted unit

How much chain do you have?
Could be why your current anchor is not working

Have a 6.8 and had the same issues
With close to ten metres of chain the bloody plough still wouldn't hold in anything of a reasonable breeze. Changed to a Sarca and instantly it picks and holds fast even in strong wind and very muddy / silty bottom ...................SARCA for me no question as the proof was clear to see

Sarcas are very good.I rate
Sarcas are very good.
I rate mine very highly. I have always used a lot of chain, so the anchor is given max chance to work well.
Interesting point, I was on board a bulk carrier not long ago having a yak with the chief officer, he was telling me that on ships, the anchor is not to hold the ship, the anchors job is soley to hold the chain in place, which in turn holds the ship. They use 900m of that massive chain when anchored in 25m. If the conditions are able to drag the anchor, the ship will move out and power up and down the coast.Complete sidetrack sorry, but intersting nonetheless.

Got a sarca myself and am
Got a sarca myself and am happy with it would consider the rocna if i had to replace it. Looking at the video it seems like they were not appling the same conditions to both anchors though.
Agree with Buz's comments re the videos
Both cips are the same Buz wouldn't mind having a look at the other if you can change the link

best anchor
just a light hearted comment about anchors , the best ones I have ever seen were custom made by the old blacksmith we had in the marine workshop in Dampier (you couldn't call him a boily as he would blast you in his thick Dutch accent saying "I am a skilled artisan not a bloody boily") , I think every one in Dampier had a Arnold Hogieboom anchor back then , oh yea and he used to hand beat the shape into them , he was and still is a skilled artisan in my opinion
