Sunglasses - what do you wear out there
Submitted by Mainey on Mon, 2010-10-18 19:44
Hi, as a newby to boat fishing I'm wondering what 'type' of sun glasses are worn out on the ocean ?
Are polarised sunglasses worth the money and as good as they are advertised to be
Thanks in advance

I use a polarised
I use a polarised polycarbonates Rapala design - 3 years down the line - still the best and it has had it's fair share of falls and rough handling.

Definately need polarised,
Definately need polarised, you'll never go back once you've started using them.
Cheapies will bring the basic differences polarisation brings but when you get into the more expensive brands you notice the difference in lense clarity, variety of colours (which bring different benefits to fishing different types of water), ease of cleaning and the cool factor to name a few.
I've used Fish, Mako, servo cheap and nasties and am currently using Spotters. Can't fault the Spotters at all but they do set you back a bit so you've got to expect a bit more for paying out that sort of coin.

Spotter Penetrator Lens are
Spotter Penetrator Lens are my first choice for everyday glasses when Im not wearing safetys. Am seriously looking at a set of Blue Mirrors for bluewater use and looking at teasers in a spread all day. Had a comparison recently and there was a good diference.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

I wear glass lense Spotters. They are a lot harder to scratch up then the poly lenses. I love em!

I use Rayban 4057's with amber lenses and Rayban 3176's with grey lenses, both are polarized and have glass lenses.
Polarized sunnies are a must have when fishing.

I use dirty dog, ugly fish & spotters. All polarised. I got through a pair of sunnies quite regularly so these brands aren't pocket killers.

maui or spotters, either way
maui or spotters, either way find a pair that blocks as much sun as possible around the edges and don't worry too much about whether they look cool or not. As someone who never wore sunnies until about 25 and has pretty damaged eyes I would never ever skimp on cheap sunnies. You only get one pair of eyes, i am happy to pay for good protection for them.

Slip 'em on
After years of staring into the ocean not wearing sunnies (surfing and fishing), I've just had a pterygium taken off. Pity I didn't take a photo to post, but to give an idea, they slice the bastard off, grind the hole flat with a diamond disk, then cut a bit off the back off your eye and stitch it into the hole. Could have paid for a fair few pairs of sunnies with the $3k the op cost.
Cheers, Choongy

Maui's
On the water I wear Maui's good wrap around style sit snug, so they don't slip when leaning over the side of the boat..

Spotters
For the best quality lens, imo, I'd like to wear Spotters.
Their glass Penetrator lens are the best arounder type of lens Ive worn.
Fully polarized and fairly scratch proof and have reflective tint on the outside and inside the lens.

spotters are a great lense
but when it comes to the frames they let themselves down.....the frames are only colour coated and clear underneath......ive had 3 pairs and for the price you pay you would expect it to be solid colur frame...... ive just sent my pair back to get fixed ( for free of course) but i still think they need to look at the frames.... otherwise they are one of the best for fishing....and like in a previous post says ... diff. colour lense for diff. type of water......

Try the Flying Fishermans - see what you catch and catch what yo
I am only a little biased,
but we have good polarized sunglasses from $45 and quality ones - Master Angler series from $130 PC RhinoLense up to $220 for the glass lenses, and they are every bit as good as other brands.
Which ever way you go try and look after them, clean your sunglasses regulary with fresh water and a micro fibre cleaning cloth , over a whole year they won't cost you that much per day for quality eyewear.
