Sting rays
Me and my mate headed to the woodman point boat ramp this afternoon for a ray session. after four hours of only a few small runs my mate finally had a promising run. after being taken 150 metres down the concrete jetty we started getting some line back on the fish. after about half an hour we saw some colour and got excited but as soon as we got it up it took off and went straight back down. we are estimating that it was atleast a 40kg+ smooth ray as after 2 and a half hours he was still stuck on the bottom! my mates line snapped so we thought it was all over but as i pulled my line in i realised that i had caught his line and so we tied his line and my line together using an albright and continued the fight but the fish wouldnt move! after nearly 3 hours we cut the line and let the ray go to swim another day. amazing fight but shame we couldnt get it up for some photos :/

next time...
…tension the line fairly tight and pick at it like a guitar string, it irritates the shit out of them and they tend to move, it's worked for me.
To fish or not to fish....

I never actually thought of
I never actually thought of that! yeah it was pretty annoying just holding onto a rod with a massive ray stuck the the bottom! we were hoping for an eagle ray! we are going again this weekend so we will try that! thanks for the tip buddy. we couldnt get it to move no matter how hard we tried

did you try
did you try to fool the ray by letting the line go loose, eventually the ray will move off or instead of pulling the line straight up, try and get some angle on it.

yeah we did. we free spooled
yeah we did. we free spooled for about 5 minutes but the ray wouldnt move! and for most of the fight we were trying to get some horizontal pull on it. like the ray was at the end of the jetty and we were about 50 metres down the otehre end so we could try get some horizantal pull on it. it would of been impossible to pull it up other wise because when we got it up the first time and saw the size of the wings we knew we wouldnt be pulling it up anytime soon, pretty sore today though. 3 hours is a long time to be hooked up to a massive ray.

That's what it's like
when ya trying to pull out the oceans plug. Deff try what's been suggested, be prepared for a long fight once ya get onto a big stingray. Got plenty of line on ya spool?
Old fishermen never die they just smell that way.
