Squid in the Cockburn Sound

 Hi all,

Thisarvo me and a few mates are heading out from woodman point to target some squid.

We havnt tried before, so we are just going to try our luck out in the middle somewhere.

Is there any recommend depths to fish in for squid? And do you need to be over weed?

I have a few good jigs, but mainly just the cheap ones. One of them glows in the dark, so it'll be interesting to see how it goes getting on sundown.

When night hits, we were thinking of heading out a little deeper to target some bigger bottom fish. Are there many snapper around still? And if so how deep do you need to go to get them. We have a decent soundar, so that should help.

Any information is greatly appreciated! As I'm a bit of a novice.

Cheers guys!

Have a good day :)

 Any depth between 6-10m hold

Any depth between 6-10m hold squid or so that's how deep we've been getting.

Get a few sizes 3, 3.5 squid jigs. Depending on the drift and wind speed that day, you may need heavier or lighter ones.

Look for weed patches interperse with sand..

I think the ban is still on in Cockburn Sound so snapper is out of the question.

Mate, yes there are plenty of snapper around but you can't target them because of the demersal fish ban that is in place at the moment. If you do catch one, take a picture and put it back in as quick as possible. Cockburn and Warnbro Sounds are snapper breeding grounds and are closed to snapper fishing and the fisheries people are all over it.
When it comes to squid, find some weed beds in about 3-6m and drift slowly over them working your squid jigs and change the colours if you aren't getting any. Just keep working the area as certain colours work at different times.

good luck

 Thanks guys.

Was unaware of the snapper ban! Will just catch and release if we get some.

Sweet, I'll grab a few different sized ones

Do you know if they're fussy on leader?

just be aware that it's

just be aware that it's illegal to even target snapper in the sound at the moment. just use smaller gear for whiting etc and you'll be fine.

leader

Thu, 2015-10-29 09:10

everyone has their own opinions on leaders but I use 20lb as it burns my arse up when i get an expensive jig snagged and busted off. I used a snap so i can change jigs quickly whereas other guys will say to tie a loop. it all works mate.

If your going to squid often

Thu, 2015-10-29 09:11

If your going to squid often might be worth buying some more jigs, rui jigs on ebay are good value, they work well too.

Purple witch, the king george imitations, are my favs.

I use fluro leader for squid, def get more with that vs mono or braid

 Cheers for the help

 Cheers for the help Lads!

We ended up getting 4 nice squid and a few decent sized herring.

The wind was perfect, so we were able to get in the sound and try a few spots about 1/4 of the way to Garden Island.

After that we deceit to go for a whizz up to carnac to take advantage of the wind. No squid there, but we got the herring on the south end.

Cheers
