Snapper time saturday!

Not sure how many have been waiting for it, but this saturday marks the opening of Snapper fishing in the Sound!

Forecast looks pretty unkind for saturday but who's got plans to get out there?

Myself if the forecast follows in it's current pattern I might have a late friday launch and get a start at midnight and come back just after dawn

I don't personally

I don't personally have reliable spots between the islands or just out, also it's more a matter of still boating comfortably and feeling safe in iffy weather otherwise i'd be out wide

I have more success outside

I have more success outside the sound I reckon aswell, plus dhuie bycatches are always welcome.

Tradewind snapper are very widespread just behind Garden Island and on ffb you just need to get up early and crank the burley!

Ideally how

 Hi Beau,

Do you look for a show before dropping the pic and burleying or just some good looking ground, burley and let them come to you. Have you had more success at one end over the other and is there a minimum depth you'd start at? There's tonnes of ground behind there, it would be interesting to know what pinkies prefer

I look for showings of fish

Tue, 2014-01-28 21:18

I look for showings of fish over patchy ground, I find they like sand and reef more than just being over reef. If I cant find a showing and its getting close to sunrise then I'll just anchor in the sand with the reef behind the boat so the burley flows back onto it. I start looking in about 9m but you can get em in 5ish. Behind the islands I like roughly 13m on ffb about 18m where it starts to break apart and is quite patchy. If I havent anchored by half an hour after sunrise I usually wont bother for snapper and go do something else, thats how important I find the change of light. If you can get burley going before sunrise then you can keep the fish around you until mid morning. We fish with two rods each, a heavier rod, pe3, with a ganghook with yellowtail or scalies, usually no sinker, tiny one if the wind is up. That gets dropped out the back of the boat and drifts down the burley trail or cast back if the wind/current is taking the burley trail too quickly. Second rod is a light rod running 15lb or 20lb rigged with a plastic, usually a squidgie wriggler or 5 inch Mcarthy finesse minnow on a 3/8oz jighead. Cast that out as far as i can in the direction the burley trail is going and work it back near the bottom until its right under the boat. The dhuues usually hit right under the boat and the snapper out the back. Burley is just cubed or mashed mulies.

Hope that helps..

Pink Snapper!

Tue, 2014-01-28 23:49

Tradewind, as Beau has mentioned ....... why not fish outside ....... the areas I fish for snapper inside the Sound or outside are similar in weather!!

Customers in my shop say the Sound ban needs to be lifted before I can get pinks ...... " absoluetly not " ......... when the demerasal ban is lifted it's still prime time but yes the outskirts of the Sound!!

When the Sound ban is lifted ..... definately the outskirts more so than the Sound (Sound is still worth a go)!

I catch & tag equal amount of pinkys between the Sound and the outskirts!

My Tips;

* Finding fish on your sounder!

* Find more active fish holding spots and look in those areas (co-ords)!

* Sunrise/sunset/high tide/anglers almanac etc are prime times .......... good luck!!!

Who am I to argue with Beau and Ryan with their results =)

Really need to work on setting up the sounder better, so far i've been unable to use it well (Lowerance LMS-527c)
