Self tightening snare on crayfish
Submitted by zhaoyun999 on Thu, 2016-02-11 15:07
Hi,
I am new to catching crays and have set myself the goal of at least catching one cray this year by freediving. Unfortunately the springloaded loop I ordered won't be able to arrive before I go on a road trip to the southwest. I however do have a self tightening snare, the ones usually used for marron.
I was wondering if the self tightening snares can be used on crays or will it actually be so difficult that it even won't be worth attempting.
Thanks

I thought self tightening snares were illegal on marron.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

To use spring loaded for marron
not to buy, remember they used to sell cray gaffs....
and opera house nets though it's claimed they are for use on private property....

"One bushman's pole snare per licensed fisher. Snares must be self tightening only." Quote straight out of the marron brochure from the fisheries website.

For marron we used to use the tip of an old 12' fishing rod with a length of wire attached to itself with a free running loop. Worked a treat and I'm sure you'd be able to rig up something like that pretty easily

to answer your question...
No. Dont even bother trying to use a marron snare to catch crayfish, let alone by freediving, and especially if youve never looped one before.
There wouldnt be any legal issues with it, but you'd have more chance of slipping ya middle digit into lady gaga's cha-cha, than you would of actually catching a cray with a marron snare.
I got about 5 cray loops if you want to borrow one or 2.

Use them before on crays.
Use them before on crays. They have their pros and cons but they do work OK. I had a SS pole, wooden handle and replacable snare wires. With a few spares in my BC pocket.
Used SS single strand flex trace as the wire. You need to seet you loop size before you go for the kill. Too big and you will foul it on the reef, too small and it wont go over the cray.
