Search in Progress Off Tamala / Cararang
Submitted by carnarvonite on Thu, 2018-09-27 19:04
An air and sea search is on off Tamala station for 2 people in an overdue dinghy, went out at 10 and haven't returned.
No safety gear at all, no anchor, no registration and no information given to where they will be fishing.
The weather isn't helping as been blowing 20 knots from s to sw all day.
Plane has just returned to Shark Bay airport after doing a search of nearby islands and over the Three Islands area. Rescue 4 from Shark Bay is continuing the search into the night

It was around 19.6 when we were there 2 days earlier
Would've been a bloody cold night, wet and very windy. Lucky they were able to make an island-- we were fishing and cruising around that very area, only left Tuesday.

Just a question? are they
Just a question? are they aussies. We have an issue in Exmouth at the moment with the change in visa laws. Young guys from spain chilli etc buying small inflateable boats with small motors on them. Using them for surfing snorkiling etc. No safety gear no rego no skippers ticket no idea and going miles out to sea in them. I saved one the other week at yardie. His string and thats what it was on his pissy anchor snapped and his 2.5m inflatable took off with a 20 knot sw. An accident waiting to happen.

Was at Yardie last week . Good entertaining watching the “ locals “ flogging down the Cape Range road at a million miles an hour towing their dinghies n jet skis over taking other cars willy nilly without a care in the world. Even nastier was watching em load a dingy up to the gills with people , boards , kites and everything else under the sun , not a life jacket or epirb in sight. It’s going to be a shame when someone cocks up royally and gets killed. Help is a long, long way away up there .It’s the age old favourite of familiarity breeds contempt. DOT would and should have a field day out there .

Silver fox...
With all due respect if they are heading out surfing then in my opinion the best piece of safety equipment they can use is the board they'll be surfing on...
Yardie is hardly what i would call open ocean, you'd paddle in in about twenty minutes if you were half paddle fit....
You must have been up nice n closely to inspect their boats also, my jackets are stuffed under my seat and not visible unless you are leaning into the boat virtually.
Cruzy was that the fellas with a chic in the boat, small inflaitable driving a subaru with AU plates? If so then you aint the first to help them out i dont think...
Jackal I hope they are found safe and well asap!!

Nothing in the news about.
Nothing in the news about. Hopefully as simple as ran out of fuel and paddled to an opposing shore.

Found
They were found on North Guano island by the AMSA search plane using FLIR [forward looking infa red camera] at about 2 30 this morning.
Congratulations must go to Drew and Jade for heading out in strong winds over 25 knots and pushing into big seas, they could only manage 8 knots on the run down to the search area then having to continually try to anchor for over an hour while waiting for the search plane to arrive from down south.
A job well done with an excellent result

Wow, We had a rubber duck out there and even in light to moderate conditions it was pretty bumpy out there.
Great job by SAR and even better to have a positive result.

Im guessing that bill is because it wasnt a rescue.
There is quite an important distinction between rescuing a person and saving/towing a boat unless of course the only possible way to save the people is by saving the boat rather than abandoning it.
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

We copped a $1000 bill for a tow from Freo traffic bridge to Freo sailing club when the motor conked on a yacht. Mast was almost up and we were drifting back towards to the railway with a 70 foot stick in the air.

Lucky Blokes
They tipped the dinghy over, losing all their fishing gear and in the process one of them got a treble in his foot, his mate had to dive under the boat to chew through the line as it was still connected to a rod snagged on the bottom. They managed to right the dinghy and bailed it out with their hands.
Luckily they drifted close to the island and decided that it was safer there than in the dinghy, good move otherwise I think we may have been looking for bodies today with the conditions they way they were last night

A big well done to all involved in the rescue/search
A good out come to what could have been a tragic event, it's events like this that make all of us who venture out on the sea to enjoy a bit of leisure time appreciate the dedication skills and dare I say bravery of those people of the S A R community who watch over us when we are on the water.
Well done good people, may your gods watch over you as you watch over us.
