Seabreeze V's Willyweather - which is most accurate

Ive always used seabreeze.com for scuba diving and boating condition forecasts. Recently i was told willyweather is more accurate by some guy i was chatting with at a barbie over summer. Since comparing the two there seems to be quite a wide variation between the two at times. For instance this weekend seabreeze says 12-15kn winds with no rain sunday while willyweather says around half that on sunday with some rain. Other times willyweather says much stronger winds than seabreeze. Which do you guys find the mmost accurate?  personally I still favour seabreeze or are there other better sites available that im not aware of

I've been screwed over by willy weather many times. I find seabreeze gives a better indication of weather conditions ahead but willy allows you to zoom into specific locations.

Just use BOM and make your own judgement.

This problem comes about mainly because people nowadays are expecting an hour by hour forcast of the weather 7-14 days ahead. And if the weather change is a few hours late or early its "wrong".

BOM is where all the data comes from (or their partners). But just because they dont give it hour by hour doesnt mean its less sophisticated.

We know (or should know) how patterns work here on the west coast better than a forecast computer based somewhere overseas.

having said that BOM has gone downhill since they changed the way they write the marine forecast.

Used to have a more comprehensive write up than now.

I don't like seabreeze. I've never had a problem with willyweather and as such it's my preferred site.

The key

Tue, 2013-05-14 11:28

is to use more than one forecaster and make your own judgements from that.

I use -  Seabreeze, willyweather, windfinder and BOM.

Is this the one your thinking of RobH? http://www.bom.gov.au/jsp/watl/wind/index.jsp

Remember that

Tue, 2013-05-14 12:07

sites like willy weather get their info from BOM anyway. Then a group of blokes aka, forecasters over east make their own interpretations about the weather.

I think the only one that doesnt use BOM information is Buoy weather.

I reckon the best way is to wait for the dew to fall of the roof and stick your head out the window !

Out of those 2 i find sea breeze the better and easier option.  But better still, use the BOM website and get some basic knowledge on how to read a synoptic chart.

Remember High pressure systems have anti-clockwise rotation and low pressure systems have clockwise rotation.  The direction of the winds will line up with the isobars.  The closer the isobars are together, the larger the swell will be and the stronger the winds.  This is a very basic way to look at at, but works very well.

Tue, 2013-05-14 17:24

You need to see where the current info is being recorded from.

Willy weather for Two Rocks comes from Pearce airbase which is 20-30 kms as the crow flys and we all know the weather at the base of the hills is never even close.

The best bet by miles for real time info is seabreeze rotto as it is 20kms out and will be the best true forecast. You will however in summer get a stronger wind inland than Rotto as the easterly starts to die off.

Mandurah is also a classic. It will give you lighter winds that the true forecast as the station is somewhat inland.

Real time but still Rotto is the most accurate by a mile.

Eric when you go one

Tue, 2013-05-14 18:28

Eric when you go one seabreeze as metro just scroll down the page.

Click on WA and then Metro and scroll as it will give you a variety of weather stations in the area.

It will only give you current wind speed not a forecast as such. Same with the swell.Seabreeze gives you a swell forecast but if you click on beach cameras on the left hand side of the page it will give you real time swell data once you scroll down past the beach cameras.

The blue line in the graph is rotto and as a rule is always lighter by half a metre than the forecast. Some days more.

If you look out side and it is borderline windy, then look at seabreeze if you kinda want to stay home, look at willyweather if you want to be convinced it is worth heading out.
