Submitted by hekser on Fri, 2012-01-13 14:03
Hi guys,
the missus has been getting onto me about going scooping for some crabs.. now i havent been scooping for years- last time was in australind when i was around 12... wondering if anyone has any locations that might be worth a go? ive been told mandurah estuary? anywhere closer to perth (eg the swan) just picked up 3 scoops so i guess i have to do it in the next week work/weather permitting- anyone have any tips? do people still wade around with the old truck tyre and eski setup?
whats the limit on crabs? size and number? still a coke can across? and like 20?
any info appreciated... i can catch a fish but im not so sure about scooping for crabs... dont want to end up embarrassing myself... lol
cheers!

dumped an amberjack carcus in the shallows around bicton an hour before dark, came back a few hours later and counted over 30 in a 10 meter radius, all undersize though. if you can stake down a few bait buckets ide assume they would come around.
Here we go again.

not a bad idea!
over near bicton baths kinda area? might have to do that, got a few snapper/tailor frames in the freezer. surely i could attract something ... probably just a shit load of blowies. but worth a try! :D
the missuses old man is oldschool fisho, he probably have some kinda idea.. might just ask him where we are headed. :D might try near applecross jetty as well, i rekn if i set out a few frames 10m across somethign will come for a feed. :D

Scooping in the swan is
Scooping in the swan is usually a lot of hard work, with long stretches between drinks. I have found spots where they congregated though, and it would be easily possible to bag out then.
Attracting them with frames might help though. good luck.

Yeah, I dunno how much longer
Yeah, I dunno how much longer I can keep smokin em....Missus is trying to put her foot down.
Mosmans was where I saw the congregations, but generally I think potting is the go there. I always see 1-2 while wading the flats during the day
so they must be around the area. Maybe try the claremont flats after dark with a dolphin torch.
You will get a lot more exercise in the swan looking for them then down south. I'm sure there are good spots around, but the numbers are down mandurah way in my experience. Doesn't seem to be as many as when I was a kid, but that could just be my memory playing tricks. Never tried the other estuaries, but my old man rates the bunno estuary.

good luck!
mosmans was always fun to go with a bunch of mates, but not so much for scooping, unless u go during the night with a good headtorch, u can try lure the crabs in the flats by shining behind them :P
plus u can spot some cool stuff along the way :) (like slugs that squirt out red goop when u prod them)
also prawning :)
there's also a bunch of cobbler down there but theyre protected in the swan...
i'm sure ur misses will enjoy that if she goes :) just a bit of a hike around.
i'm a newb.

Scooping crabs
If you want to scoop the Swan/Canning River, I was wading the flats inbetween the Canning Bridge and South perth Yacht Club on Tuesday. It was a shame i didnt have a crab scoop because there was good numbers of big blues cruising the shallows. That was at about 1pm with an incoming tide. Otherwise the infamous Mandurah estuary would be worth a go this time of year. Walking along Coodanup foreshore Which is off of Wanjeep Rd will provide a feed.
The bag limit is 10 per person, 127mm across the carapace (back). If you use a coke can its actually a bit larger than 127mm so your minimizing the chance of keepers too. We sell the plastic crab gauges for $2.95 so its not a bad little investment. And dont be afraid to keep females either, The fisheries support the idea of a mixed bag, (Provided their not carrying eggs/ Spawning) The females quite often taste sweeter too.
Cheers

we kept out first female from
we kept out first female from the swan last week but only because we were doing it tough and she had a carapace over 155mm, they are so small compared to males of relative size claw wise. not a big issue in the swan as have found %95 of what we catch are males.
Here we go again.

Yeh yours always going to
Yeh yours always going to get alot of people dropping nets in the deeper channels from deepwater point to canning bridge, thats where the blues mainly hang around, sometimes you get the strays that get lost in the shallows, night time however is a different story they come out to look for the females lol.
