scared or playful seal surprised swimmers at North Cottesloe beach ??

just reading this article , I cant help but wonder if the seal was just trying to stay in the shallows and seek out other company that resembled its own kind in some way for safety in numbers kind of thing

would be interesting to know if any untagged sharks had been sighted in that area around the same time ...?

Yeah I had much the same thought.

Intermittently see a big female in and around mettams when surfing and if behaviour is abnormal (over excited and too close) I get a lot more vigilant.

I sometimes drive the tractor towing the screen that cleans the beach at Cott and I'm often driving up and down the beach in the early hours of the morning.

One calm glassy morning at 3:30am a seal came out of the water at a great rate of knots, it looked like a torpedo and slid right up to the dry sand right in front of my tractor.

I can only think of one reason why it would be in such a rush to get out of the water. I didn't see anything though.

There was no way he/she was going back in the water straight away. I drove around it passing within a couple of meters and it wasn't concerned at all.

After about half an hour sitting there and looking out to sea it finally decided it was safe again and waddled back into the water and swam off slowly.
