Saltist 6500 matching

Hi guys finally received a reel I had won a while ago being the saltist 6500

now need to decide on a rod to mmatch purely for popper use

im contemplating runnin 50lb as that is ample for my needs but capacity is quite large with 400m of pe6

anyone have an idea of some reasonable but cheaper braid of around 500m spool? Was thinking maybe some PowerPro?? Or Tufline XP?

and need a rod to match looking at either....

- daiwa demon blood 803xxh

- demon blood 762x

- Wilson live fibre venom 7'6 pe5 spin popper

- tcurve offshore 802 stickbait

- shimano terez spin 7'8 heavy / xheavy

- shimano ocea offshore 802 stickbait

- daiwa Catalina ch79s.n (although may be a bit pricey )

Always considered it more of an 80lb reel due to its size and robustness but still only has max 15kg drag?!

anyone think I'm wasting use of the reel by running 50lb rod and line?!

I think its a very big reel to use just 50lb on it.

Friends don't let friends use power pro either.

Even though only 15kg of drag till?!

ive never used power pro. Mostly stick to daiwa 8 braid, sunline super pe and daiwa TD sensor. I've heard good things about the tufline xp for popper use?! Don't wanna go overboard and pay big $$$$ as its an outfit tht will only get used every now n then...

The basic rule for drag is

Thu, 2012-11-29 17:18

The basic rule for drag is 30% of the BS, so 3x 15kg is 45kg ~100lb, but that is the maximum, so 80lb and 12kg of drag is well within the limit.

Its one third for the drag, one third for the knots and one third up your sleeve.

There are reasons you might vary that rule, like differing conditions, or better knots, but its a good place to start from.

Recently purchased

I recently purchase a saltist 6500 and loaded it with 50lb Tuffline briad. I matched with Shimano Starlo 1006 graphite rod. Rod is bit longer than you have stated in your choice. but can cast lures up to 100g. Also the extra length was handy when steering fish around the reef ledges. Plenty of backbone for when you hook that big one

Took it up to Quobba recently and was able to stop up to 7kg sharkies and even caught a 5 ft shark on the last day. Was able to stop the shark pretty easily and same for the sharkies. very imprest with the who set up. Was casting 85g Raiders, 3oz jigs, halco max, and poppers up to 100mtrs.

Rod cost $119 at BCF

Took nearly 600mtrs Tuffline which I bought on Ebay at half the cost the shops price.

Pic below of set up hooked to good size mackie

+1 for the Tufline XP.

I think it's a bit thicker than some of the more expensive boat braids, but it handles the abrasion from repeated casting better than some of the thinner braids.

load it with 80lb, fits easy

Thu, 2012-11-29 15:51

load it with 80lb, fits easy 300m of it. should be running 1/3rd drag so thats 30lb so 15kg is more than that. those new ocea stickbait rods look OK  i have a T Curve Bluewater 15-24kg spin that i use, nice big eyes for your doubles and twisted leaders with plenty of grunt $300 at Mo's but i'm sure Oceanside could cut you a good deal

I'd spend the extra $30 and get the 792 Ocea GT rod, bigger rating and handles the 80lb instead of the smaller one. Live Fibre Venom is another nice rod too i think you're on the money regardless and will handle a 15kg GT if needed.

Monster mesh max

Fri, 2012-11-30 03:37

Have a look at the Daiwa monster mesh max 72MH 7'2/2 piece PE3-6, 30 -120g, I use it with my saltist loaded with 60lb.

I think the rod is only $280 from MO's from memory.
