Submitted by Rig on Sat, 2010-10-16 13:04
Hi
my quest for a heavy land based long casting rod continues. I haven't been able to get a tiralejo 1300s so I am looking at the ballistic which can cast up to 10oz anyone got one and what do they think. And has anyone got 1 they might want to sell
cheers

Tiralejo
If you still want a Tiralejo they still had one in the camping store in Joondalup the other day. Prices had gone right back up again from ealrier in the year though.

jeez 650 bucks? nice lookin rod but bloody hell.....
not keen on making the switch to overhead? would probably end up casting a fair bit further when working with such heavy weights as well i reckon

america
about $450aud in america at the moment
there arent alot of rods on the market in this division, alot of rod builders i have spoken to arent into doing these types of rods as the ones off the shelf are just as good if not better in their opinion.
good thing for me is that i can use it for 2 purposes
1 heavey surf fishing
2 snapper fishing off the rocks up north it is lighter than my current snapper rod and strong enough to dead lift most things up

Yep
I have endlessly googled them and haven't see any negative feedback. But in that end of the Market there really shouldn't be any problems. The only thing I don't like is the height of the reel seat but it's in that position to help casting

i thought the real seats could move up or down one of the only rods that you could use for spin as well as overhead

Doin some research, the american tiralejo only goes to 12 ft, but has a 10 oz casting weight ie 280 gram. $350 usd + postage.

correct
buying from the usa the tiralego and ballistic are closely matched price wise, if i can get a ballistic for the same price as the tiralejo i think i am getting a better rod. buying in perth the tiralejo is about $400(if i can find 1) and ballistic $650. Nobody knows why they stopped making the tiralejo which might mean there was some problems not that i have heard of many, one tackle store told me a few have snapped in the middle but i havent heard that elsewhere through extensive googling.
BRG- the tiralejo has the moving reel seat but comes in 2 different models for spin or overhead( bluwater has some overheads still available). The ballistic can be used either as a spin rod or and overhead which i suppose means the blank is designed to bend both ways under load, not sure how common that is
POB - i will try adventure west there are 2 13' spin rods available one lighter on heavier a few shops around the place have the lighter ones but i want the heavy one for what i am going to use it for

The american tiralejo has a totally different blank by the looks of things too. aus xt300 to yankies tc4k???? Ive heard some daiwas are different too. Probably depends on materials available. So I am a bit suspect about prices here versus there as the rod might be totally different. I know the aus tiralejo only casts to 110 gram versus yankies 280 gram in 12 ft.

The models i have seen in perth havent got the low rider guides, maybe they are available in shorter rods but not too sure, but the american ones on ebay seem to have the lowrider guides.

From what i have heard the tiralejo overhead are still getting made as there is a big enough market for them worldwide as the spin sold pretty much in aus only.If ordering for usa make sure your getting a spin and not an overhead tiralejo. If you can afford it the saltiga ballistic is pretty much the best surf rod available.

Have you looked into the Loomis & Franklin stuff Justin? I think for the same price you would be getting an even better rod for LBG. I think the L&F Sharkey is a model to look at

nah fairly sure they dont
nah fairly sure they dont have a website.
if you do a search on www.sealine.co.za for the loomis sharkey or shockwave there are heaps of reviews. Loads of other heavy surf rods over there as well

yep
read all of them but there is no real accurate info, a couple of those people claim those rods are easily damaged have snapped etc (peoples opinions). From what i can see loomis and franklin if they were a reputable brand in this day and age would have a website, beats me how they sell gear without a product range

yea true.
if your after the stats (blanks etc) u could either try sending a pm to RAGBAG on here, think he has owned a few. or email Kahn from www.rockhustler.co.za
I have also heard the same about being easily damaged but I think that is mainly the HMG (high modulus graphite) models, give them a bang on rocks and your gonna have probs.
good luck in ya hunt mate

...mate i would not dead
...mate i would not dead lift any thing over 2kg maybe 3kg with a ballistic from the cliffs.........= cliif gaff..........they are a strong lite rod..........issue with being lite is the thiner walls and any sort of nick they might get whilst in the course of fishing is an explosion waiting to happen
i dead lift with my purglass 3 from steep cliffs and 3kg is max weight i would go and even then i felt unsure
my mate has snapped the mid piece on one and it was an absolute mission for him to get a replacement as the manufacturer does not like peeps buying 'parts'.......wanted him to buyh the whole rod
luckily the`seller went in on his behalf and he got a replcement which he had to pay for
thought id let ya know
you going to cervates with the casters....im thinking about it atm

Loomis
I thought I would update this
I have had a look at the shop that used to be ranger in osb park. They are special ordering loomis and franklin. They have some that cast up to 7 oz in stock the rod is thick like a tiralejo but the componentry looks a bit cheap and tacky for a $500 rod I don't like the wooden butt either. At the moment I would spend the extra money on a ballistic

I still dont get how they
I still dont get how they can charge those prices, the one you looked at would have been the shockwave i think. I rate the L&F rods highly but your right they are entry level for heavy duty surf and to charge that is robery
the Loomis sharkey is very similar to the shockwave but 9oz and larger guides, about $350 imported from sa including delivery

like me if you're too tight
like me if you're too tight to fork out $650 for the ballistic you can wait for the June bluewater sale 20% off everything. Got mine matched with a saltiga surf 6000 for less than a grand

decision time
oh well i will make a decision in the next week i think
Sharkey
pros cheaper at about $350
on reputation is strong
cons I havent held that model in my hands
is heavier
hard to get a warranty
HMG could get damaged in transit or on rocks
could be too stiff not to feel bites/nibbles
Ballistic
pros faster taper should have more feel for bites
lighter
if it breaks within reason should be a warranty
better componentry and probably better tested by daiwa
cons almost double the price $650
high real seat i might need to modify later
conclusion: maybe i should man up and spend the money, i'll sleep on it

hey mate, On the sharkey
hey mate,
On the sharkey ill try and give you some more info.
Yep VERY strong, but I have heard the HMG is easily damaged as you have said, which is why i got the standard one.
Pretty bloody stiff! the HMG even more so than mine. may be an issue for some types of fishing. I use it sliding for sharks so ok for what i use it for.
One pro for the sharkey in my book is the big 16mm guides right to the tip, casting heavy leader knots is no prob. Also, its up to casting 9oz sinker plus big baits, but i guess the ballistic may well be up to that as well.
Your welcome to check out my sharkey mate if that helps your decision (free morning and early arvo this weekend in northern suburbs, pm me) but if feeling smallish bites is important i would say the sharkey may not be the right rod.
hope that helps.
Cheers,
Adam

Thanks sherbs
Thanks sherbs. The rod isn't really for steep point although I will take it there to do some nightine beach fishing. Sounds like a nice rod your getting made. Cuthbad I would appreciate it if I could have a look at yours. I will send you a pm.
On the hmg after a few emails back and forward from Rock hustler I don't think they make a sharkey that isn't hmg anymore. And it sounds like you got an old 1 with the newer guides. They changed them as people were having problems casting leeder knots
