Salmon in the river at Pt Walter
Submitted by Swompa on Sat, 2016-04-23 19:32
Big school in the river today, pushing up to Point Walter. Wouldn't have believed it had I not seen it myself. Few videos on Facebook at Bicton of a very large school smashing a bait school

We'd seen a few large fish
We'd seen a few large fish jumping in Blackwall reach and I thought surely not, then we saw a few boats hooked up and I couldn't believe it. Lucky pic to see it jumping.

that's what john actually
that's what john actually posted below
& I fully agree with him on that point he made below for the place and time of the year
it is highly unusual for adult spawning salmon to go up rivers ......AND YOU WOULD NOT EXPECT IT
juvenile salmon trout will hang in estuarys as they grow
this year is one of the best migrations of adult fish in years all up the wa coast
so they may turn up anywhere , but its not a normal place you would expect to find them ,
just goes to show truth is stranger than fiction

More than likely they were sea mullet, very much doubt salmon have reached metro beaches yet and wouldn't expect they are going to travel up river[

Nothing is unusual these days
a lot of northern species caught in metro over the last few years. Nothing is out of the ordinary anymore.
I have personally witnessed a lot of Salmon being regularly caught in the swan over the last few years. Ive seen heaps of photos over the years of salmon from in the Mandurah estuary, Bunbury estuary, Kalgan river, Blackwood, etc.

yeah can back that up, each
yeah can back that up, each year they have been pushing further and further up through freo harbour and into the swan over the last few that ive noticed.
where the bait goes to hide they will follow regardless, they dont give a stuff if its a river.

Thank you
Thank you Hezzy.
I still stand up for what I said, it is high unusual for adult salmon to travel up river. If I was wrong well I apologise but if I was right who will ever know.
Yes, I have netted salmon trout in the Leschnault estuary but not in large numbers, no more than 5-6 in amongst hundreds of kilos of mullet

yea exactly. past experience
yea exactly. past experience and knowledge are usually right. But in recent years things are changing so who knows. its not like i had a clear photo of what i saw so its not like carnavonite is calling my bullshit. i have the uptmost respect for people who have the years of experience i dont. :))
its not like salmon in the river is a bad thing so ahah get out and enjoy it guys :)

Chasing food
From the video you can see the fish were frantic for food. Estuaries including the Swan could be breeding grounds...it is a spawning run that the fish are on.

Thing is the river isn't
Thing is the river isn't truly a river, it's more a tidal esturine and salt water probably all the way up past Ascot.

Good point Sea-kem
If compared to other SW estuary systems is pretty typical of the other estuaries before man had intervened with modifications etc

That is not good
Seeing fish wash up on the shore that have been killed and then dumped gets my blood boiling. There is no excuse for such a thing like that.
If you are not going to do something good with the fish release them unharmed so that some one else can enjoy the experience you just had.

Salmon busting up along with a couple of dolphins under the old traffic bridge at the moment.
Already about 25 people and a couple of boats there.
