Rotto fishing

Hi all, Im heading over to rotto this weekend in my boat staying the night on the island.

Was wondering if i can get any tips or spots or ideas on where to try and what for. Weather permitting i wouldnt mind pushing out to the barges but was hoping to just find a nice lump and berly up for skippy( hopefully maybe a sambo or 2 might show up). Aslo are there many king george whiting out there.

Cheers all help appreciated as it my first time out there with my boat.

stragglers reef is a reef

Tue, 2010-11-30 19:53

stragglers reef is a reef and some rocks between rotto and the mainland.. it is directly out from freo harbour. although there are skippy and jnr sambos hanging all arround closer to rotto.

if you want to try closer to rotto, try any where on the northern side or out from stricos (strickland bay on the southern side)

It is important to burley up though, then just flick arround some SPs or little baits.

cheers,

tom

Berley up question

Tue, 2010-11-30 21:52

Hi all

I have a question regarding berleying up. In deeper water, is it better to berley up for skippy etc on the surface or via a weighted berley bucket below the boat?

I understand that you only want to attract the fish with the berley and not feed them, so what's the best berley to use for both scenarios, please....premixed berley or pollard mixed with water and fish oil or chopped up mulies/whitebait or fish oil soaked pellets or a combination of all the above?

I would berley below the surface,

otherwise you'll be surrounded by birds.  The combo sounds good. Laughing

Berley

Rusty,
You almost answered your own question regarding what to use.... Yes to what you said but you can also add crushed seafood shells, minced fish frames/guts etc. Even chunks of mulies (not a lot) will bring them around but use a "bigger" piece of mulie for bait to get the big ones.

As for surface or weighted.... try both. Suspend a berley bucket under the boat and throw a few of the mulie cubes over... They sink reasonably quick.

Berley below the surface

Tue, 2010-11-30 22:13

Thanks dagree....does the berley bucket need to be very far below the surface? I'm guessing that the berley is going to sink anyway, so as long as your bait/SP ends up in the trail, you stand the best chance of a hookup.

Depth?

Depends how deep you are fishing and the current but I usually drop mine about 3 to 6 metres below the boat.

the best technique we have found is a bin full of chook laying pellets with some tuna oil in it these sink quickly and have always been effective for us on all species

Thanks to everyone for their comments, greatly appreciated.

Now, if these southerly winds are gone by Sunday, I'll be able to put some of these berleying options into practice!!
