MORE than 500,000 litres of sewage has spilled into the Southern River in Brookdale after routine maintenance works went wrong.
Alarm bells sounded at a pumping station on the corner of Henderson and Lake Roads at 8pm last night where the Water Corporation were working on a major pipeline.
The spill occurred after repairs on the pipeline took longer than expected, causing pump stations upstream to reach capacity and become dangerously close to overflowing into residential areas.
To avoid catastrophe upstream, workers were forced to release the sewerage into the nearby Southern River, according to Phil Kneebone from the Water Corporation.
The Southern River flows into the Canning River which eventually reaches the Swan River.

Totally agree Salmo!
Totally agree Salmo! I suppose the water corp will explain it away as a necessary action of last resort.

News Fash!
A govt. dept. has realized the state of the Swan's fish stocks and released thousands of blind mullet into the system.
The minister says, this will be a great increase in the algae that feeds many of the Swan's micro organisms and is a great step in increasing the growth within the system.

Sorry Sam, i would rather eat glass than night dive - it's a good thing the burst wasn't downstream of Parliament.
