Reel & rod combo advice bottom bashing
Submitted by Anonymous on Mon, 2015-02-09 20:22
Over the years I've just been using cheap rods & reels and it has been fine but now I'm starting to chase bigger fish. Off to port Gregory on the 19th & in hope of some tuna and macs, going to be using a penn 330 Gti, spooled with fresh mono (12 year old reel mint condition) for trawling. What I'm after is some recommends for bottom bouncing & the occasional jig preferring eggbeater... Will be fishing in depths of 30-40m & my budget for a combo would be around the $450 mark. Only would be jigging every now & then so would be primarily bait fishing until I find out if I like jigging, if So i will buy a dedicated jig combo later.
im also open to secondhand gear & jigs :)

Fish2go, saw it on TV today, they reckon it will catch everything that swims.

Bang for buck - Penn V series reels
on special the V goes for $150 ish. Very good value.
For the really big stuff Fin Nor Leathal 100 for $150 delivered - fourth best blue water reel in the world according to Mr Hawk. A work colouge got one before Xmas , it looked and felt ok.
The Penn SSV reels are very good for $90 , just make sure you strip them down for a grease up before first outing - then they will last a huge time, grease every nook and screw hole though.

Lethal 100 if you want heavy
Lethal 100 if you want heavy stuff, got mine for $130 with a free spinfisher rod and its solid as hell. Got Sunline super PE8 on mine and works well. Handled big rays well over 100 kilos with ease and works well for bottom bashing, balooning, etc.

I havn't used the lethal 100
I havn't used the lethal 100 but know it's a massive reel.
couple of things to note. the lethal 100 is in Alan Hawks top four but that doesn't mean that there are not plenty better (just not in production....you mentioned second hand is an option) also just note that the lethal 100 is the reel that is reviewed. the smaller reels in the lethal series use different components and are not up there with the 100.
getting back ...the 100 is a big reel and if you are jigging B bouncing in 30-50 m IMO it's too big.
If you are anything like most ppl who start to jig, then you will find yourself getting a bit addicted and want to jig more and more. I believe if you go for something like the letal 100 early down the track you will be saying "this reel is just ridiculously big and want to change pretty soon
personally I would go for something smaller that will actually give you a good experience jigging. (I assume you mean demersal jigging not sambo/GT jigging?)
FWIW a shimano 5000 size reel is perfect for that depth.
If you get something like a stradic FJ($199) you can BB as well as enjoy jigging.

Cheers for your input
Cheers for your input guys... I do like the look of the stradic 5000fj and it seems a lot of people rate them. I think that may be my reel, will be heading down tomorrow after nightshift to pick one up with a rod to match.

I have an 8000 stradic
with 30lb braid matched to a 10 to 15kg spin rod that is fine for lighter bottom bashing/trolling and casting larger lures at feeding fish and jigging metals up to about 100gm. Alot of people will poo hoo a 7 ft rod for jigging but personally I find it a good length. Very versatile outfit and it gets used heaps. Can fish 8 oz. leads bottom bashing no problems.

Stradic 8000 matched to a
Stradic 8000 matched to a PE3-5 fishing WA Rod.
$200ish for reel and $250 for rod.
Would be a fairly nice set up for it. Could jig with it and still bottom bash and would handle most fish easily

pflueger salts seem to have
pflueger salts seem to have a good write up for the cheaper end of the scale that would leave more coin for a higher end rod.

Hell of a combo.....nothing
Hell of a combo.....nothing that wont stop.
I have a venom as well and they are a great rod. (quality components and will last very well.) Have a stella attached to mine and bottom bashed northern waters with it....picked up some big big stuff. and put some serious hurt on massive fish with it.
It will bend right through the butt and when you think "is this too much?"....put more into it and fish just don't have a chance.

Its just a shame
that for a such expensive off the shelf rod, they cannot build them on the backbone. Same for the majority of off the shelf rods, even ultra expensive brands..
