Protecting your boat from cray pots
Submitted by Piggy on Mon, 2013-11-11 16:54
I tried searching but couldn't find anything that relates.
however I'm wondering if and what everyone uses to protect the gunnels on your boat when pulling up cray pots. I have 2 out there at the moment and every time I pull them up I take paint chips out the top of the gunnel. If anyone has the same issue and has got something in place to protect it please let me know!
cheers

Cray pot damage
Piggy,
We all use cray pot tippers that are made especially for amateaurs. They cost around $400 but save all that damage to your boat and your back. They are made of ali and are easily stored out of the way when not in use.

Look for a conveyor belt
Look for a conveyor belt place or salvage yard and buy a couple of meters of old conveyor belt rubber.
Can also be used for the following
1/ under the trailer tyres while beach launching
2/ keep in the ute tray for when bogged in sand
3/ punch a hole in the end, tie a rope and tow the kids along the beach
4/ leave it in the backyard for fking snakes to hide under :-(
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

Poly pipe
Poly pipe over the gunwhale is by far the best bet. Just split it down one side with an angle grinder and spread it out enough to fit over.
Rubber matting is ok on the side of the boat for protection but when wet it acts as a brake on the rope when you are pulling it in making what should be easy into bloody hard work.

A mate stole his mrs' yoga mat for this purpose.
Seemed to work!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
