Pro Fishing Vessel in Sound
Submitted by Ush on Fri, 2023-05-05 11:38
Gday all, curious - does anyone know of any commercial operations from inside the sound? Was out on Monday 2/5/2023, a vessel pulling a net from the dropoff at the shacks out towards to the medina channel. Gridding the entire area.
Any ideas on whats happening there?

Maybe scallop dredge
Saw what looked like a small scallop type dredge out the back of a 15-20m trawler type boat on my way to Stragglers a couple of weeks back. Might be the same boat, but they weren't actively towing anything. Seemed to be sitting around a lot, so maybe just getting sorted or setting up gear.

Interesting, have never seen
Interesting, have never seen it before. the width of the net wasnt much wider then the beam of the boat. Unsure how far back the net went, had some floats suspending it a few meters back.

Mulies?
Sounds like a mulie purse seine boat. Spot the school on sonar, run the net around, close the bottom up then haul it in. There used to be about 5-6 working from Fremantle but think there are only 2-3 now with most mulies coming from Albany now

Recon your onto
Recon your onto Carnarvonte,
The bait fish out wide last week was off the charts, seen a few other sounder pics this week also.
Did a Rottnest trip Wednesday, north of Thomos in the bay seen a few decent schools of snook / gardies.

Yeh it's the sardine boat.
Yeh it's the sardine boat. They work 2am to sun up. Circle the sardines draw the net and pump them on board, once full let the remaining go.
