PR Knot for Casting
Submitted by Cameron71 on Sun, 2012-11-04 21:00
Well, the wife is in hospital with a new baby (yes it is mine) the little girl is in bed, I have two videos and am thinking of tying PR Knots to Yozuri Pink Fluorocarbon on my Stella 8000 and two certates (4000 and 3500).
Do these cast OK or am I going to have to cut them out and tie something more pedestrian when I want to send a metal out?

The fg casts better and you
The fg casts better and you don't need some wanky overpriced crap to tie it with ;)
Oh and grats.

Thanks Jamie.
When I first saw a "PR Bobbin" my wanky overpriced crap detector went off like a frog in a sock, and I thought "wait a minute, isn't that pretty much the same as a $5 fly tying bobbin that I can get from eBay?" AND IT WAS!!!!!
Saw a guy in Tackle HQ tying a leader on for a mate using a $250 PR Bobbin. Staggering. There's one born every minute, even at wholesale prices.
That said, I am really into marketing and take my hat off to anyone who can get people to pay that for something churned out of chinese factory by the thousands.

Ahh they're really into the
Ahh they're really into the wank up there at the all caravan business.
I have a $5 fly bobbin and a bit of lead sheet, does the job if you have to use the PR knot.
Either way, give the FG a crack and see how it suits.

PR bobbin knot
The PR Bobbin knot can be used for casting, Just be sure to keep the body of the knot small. If its too large than its like trying to cast a wind knot through your guides.
As for PR bobbins them selves they can be as cheap as $5 for a very simple Fly bobbin or as much as $250. The ease of tying the knot with the upmarket bobbins is what you pay for aswell as a bit of bling factor. We sell alot of the Jigging Master PR bobbins at $129 instore. We also sell $29 Jigtalk bobbins for those that dont want to go all out on the JM one.

I spent $70 on a bobbin and reckon its awesome, I use the PR knot everytime, never ever had a problem with it casting although I do my knots smaller if Im not chasing big fish. Whenever I have a bust off it has never been at the bind. I can tie the PR knot faster than everything but a double uni now. My bobbin is well used, highly rate them

I worry about short fgs and
I worry about short fgs and prs because the shorter they are, the less friction grip. In light line and sometimes in medium line I have used the slim beauty to great success and like it because of the braid having a lock knot in the leader to sit against. I suppose that could contribute to wear if the knot wasn't pulled up well.

Sure, but too long and you
Sure, but too long and you get the opposite problem!
What happens is that, each loop gets pulled up a little bit tighter, and then there is actually a lot of loose line, and then the cyclic loading, it can drop the friction.

I know it's different, but
I know it's different, but had a sambo at the barges, PE6 and 130lb leader, got sharked and leader broke from rubbing against shark body ... PR Knot was holding alright, so trimmed leader (was 3m) and carried on fishing.
thanks to Oceanside for setting me up with a JM bobbin
happy with the drag system on these things
Cheers,

I use the FG knot for most
I use the FG knot for most applications 14lb+ ( PR for jigging) takes me a little longer than my mates but i like being able to run my leader onto my reel and still be able to cast and the added pressure i can put on the fish at the closing stages of the fight.
Cheers Yewie
PS will be getting a JM bobbin soon for the bling and wank factor (what's $129 compared to thousands spent on rods, reels and lines?)

You do have valid point
You do have valid point there. I should not be such a hypocrite since I have to admit to a bit of a bling thing myself.

nothing wrong with bling,
nothing wrong with bling, first consideration for me when buying fishing gear is quality followed closely by bling factor!

I'm the same i use the PR for
I'm the same i use the PR for every braid - leader connection. Make the leader about 3 meters and if you get sharked/reefed trim retie jig continue. I really stand by the PR i make my knot length about 80-100mm for my PE3 - PE10 jig + pop sticks never had a knot failure.
Picked up the $25 Bobbin from oceanside and once you have tied a couple its total cake mate! 3 wraps around the bobbin arm for tension and 12 wraps around the spool, wrapped tight and neat! Looks the bomb and handles anything you could ever want to throw at it. You dont need the expensive bobbin to get a great looking and well tied knot ;)
I've jigged big sambo's, yellowfin tuna up to 50kg and even a 2.5m bronzey on a popper and you guessed it... Solid knot!
