Pinging Etiquette

Was out approx 10nm west of rotto drift fishing with no one else in sight then after about half an hour a boat circled me about 50m away then approach the lee side of boat to about 20m. I asked what they wanted but the skipper was too busy looking at his sounded so had the ask again. He eventually replied I just want to let you know I already have this spot marked in my GPS and I’m definitely not pinging your spot. I said yeah whatever then they setup drift about 20m away.

I would have thought if they already had the spot they would have known well before arriving at my position and maybe choose another spot to fish? Or is this normal pinging etiquette in WA?

Pretty standard

The mentality around spots in Perth is pretty lame and it's treated by some as a free for all. I move off my good spots if I see a boat coming.

Yep bunch off c#nts up here

Tue, 2020-01-07 17:17

Yep bunch off c#nts up here with no etiquette at all. Has happened to me before. I always move off when I see a Boat approaching and if I’m heading towards a spot that I can pretty well see a boat is already fishing I divert and go somewhere else

i was having a fish Sunday and my sea anchor snapped early on so I was just piss farting around on some average ground and the amount of boats that were on there way in I could clearly see they slowed down when they came past and made no effort to go around

10 nautical miles west of rotto is a long way out. Around the FADS i believe. If he was pinging you he is a fu@#wit. ALGNO (all the gear no idea). but it may havr=e been near a FAD?. No Excuse in a big ocean. plenty of spots, but plenty of muppets. Fish on regardless... Perth waters are getting serious;ly hammered these days...

thats pretty bad performance.

i normally just move a few miles to get away from people like that. It’s not worth the hassle.

Common problem these days,

Tue, 2020-01-07 20:26

Common problem these days, wasnt a problem 10/15 years ago. More respect shown to others back then. alot more boats out there and alot of them new to boat ownership. Its bag out at all costs.

Yeah for sure it crap. I moved 5min later to another spot about half mile away just can’t bear fishing so close to other people.

Fair enough we may have the same spot marked but why you would want to fish the spot someone else is fishing at the same time beats me.....

Hey mate whats the coordinates? I think I have that spot too

Seriously though ive found because of the number of people who go around Rotto it is a lot worse there than other areas.

 Can someone educate me on

Thu, 2020-01-09 13:12

Can someone educate me on the best technique to rooster tail? I’ve seen someone soak an entire ramp once, tried it myself in a secluded spot and didn’t really much a splash ! Just raise the engine when in gear right ?

Need to raise the leg so

Thu, 2020-01-09 14:54

Need to raise the leg so most of the prop is out of the water. You will hear exhaust note get louder. Drop into gear and good stab of the throttle does the job.

Lower the outboard & prop into the water so it just touches the water ,about half the prop (very important) get all people on boared to hang on and not to move around in the boat (very important) and give it some herbs, being very careful it does'nt bite and send you out the back of the boat looking like a right tool.Looking for happy balance of water & air flying off to the boat next to you .

Then lower the rev's and lower the moter and drive off slowly or fast depending on the reaction

I like the descriptive instructions.

The rooster tail does come with some risks!

Have seen many inexperienced boaters full of the amber flued attempt this and come a cropper big time out the front of the pub on the rock.

Excellent ! Thank you folks. Time to practise and then soak the deckie next time he is late and walking down the ramp with that arrogant “sorry I’m late mate, I picked up last night “. Will wipe the smile right off his face !

 Haha the good old rooster

Thu, 2020-01-09 20:27

Haha the good old rooster tail.  Very effective when you get it right. Was backing my boat up to the beach at gnarloo to drop off the deckie to go and get the car so I was already trimming up the motor. Dropped him off in knee deep water then let him have it as he walked out. Couldn't have done it any better I reckon. The wave/spray was around 3meters high. The deckie was absolutely spewing and was soaked right through. I was in tears laughing while the other deckie didn't say squat. He got the last though as he went back to my car which was only around 2 months old soaking wet and just jumped in with out a care in the world and came back with a big smile on his face.

Fished all my life and never

Fri, 2020-01-10 06:06

Fished all my life and never had the happen till the past few years, people with no idea how to catch a fish or what they are doing out there. I was even pinged fishing for whiting then they turned back and dropped some 10/0 hooks over the side..... Total gooses.

I recon we should start taking pictures and shaming them.

Fortunately have meet some lovely people beach fishing, through asking or being asked if it is OK to fish near each other just as a matter of courtesy when there might be limited good fishing holes when the weed is bad.

Beach fishing

Fri, 2020-01-10 18:32

Always used 2 rods when beach fishing, one for when the drop ins cast over you and make sure you tangle it up real well , stick that rod in the holder then pick up the other and cast out and continue fishing, leaving them to sort their mess out.

Do this a couple of times and they get the message
