old farts style v technology
when would you rather have started your fishing career, back when there was no GPS, only paper sounders, no braid etc, but there was lots more fish, or now with all the high tech gizmos, braid, super boats and sounders that can see a sardine on the bottom at 50m. Don't get me wrong luv all the electrics and gear around today but my take is that nowadays you need all the high tech stuff to catch fish. we used to head s/w from mack. islands steer a compass bearing and find the spot 20 miles away, but boy there was heaps when you got there, you could allways find your way home, just look for the smoke from trevenard. On the plus side there was a lot less sharks around in those days. mind you know one fished 300m or deeper

I remember heading to the shelf off green head as a kid with my uncle, he would have the charts out the night before and steer out on a bearing. The paper sounder was only turned on when we got close. He spend 5k on a high end lowrance sounder about ten years ago, still uses the paper one as well though.
Love the new technology bit did learn a lot fishing the old way, not too sure many blokes would know what to do these days if their GPS shit itself. On the other hand I would definately miss having one!!
Tight lines to all :)

Old ways
You had to be on the ball back then, landmarks or compass bearings x speed x time to get back to you grounds. Dripping on the sinker along with a heap of small hooks to find what the bottom was and what sort of weed was on it.
Makes me remember of a trip off Naturaliste with a mate to his hot spot, he asked if I wouldn't look at his ubeaut new GPS to see where the spot was then broke out laughing when he realised that I had already picked out marks to find it again if I wanted to.
Just makes it too easy now days.

Stones
Not the first time that I had run out of sinkers and spark plugs so used to tie rocks on as sinkers.
The first time up there, from Bunbury then ,cost us $2 a night in the shearers quarters around 1969-70
