North of rabbit proof fence? kalbarri

hey all.

anyone spent the time to explore and fish the coast North of the rabbit proof fence, north of Kalbarri? Know its pretty rugged country heading up to the Zuytdorp cliffs and further north. but surely there some accessable ledges and beaches?

been looking abit on on trusty google earth and looks like a few possibilities but it can be decieving.

Just wondering whether its worth an explore, any knowledge out there?

thanks

bryn

Been passed there by sea quite a few times and there's not a lot of spots where you can get down far enough to fish from what I've seen.

May be a bit different from on the land though.

One of my mates Dads friends

One of my mates Dads friends used to do trips up there. He would just drive in from the NW coastal Hwy and follow it all the way to the coast then head either north or south. There are actually quiet alot of good spots he said where you can get down close to the water on reef flats and little ledges. There are a few permanent shacks along that stretch too.

The only thing i would be a bit iffy about doing that though is that i am under the impression it is all station land (except for the Zuytdorp and Cooloomia nature reserves) so you might need permission. In saying that though my mates friends dad said he never came across any locked gates driving in, but this is a guy who i also know always carried a set of universal keys(boltcutters) in his car. Guess he'll get caught one day.

The only thing i'll say from hearing his reports of what he would catch, is that its is a hell of a long drive, 4x4 all the way once you leave the NW Coastal Hwy. No water, so you have to be 100% self-sufficient. Personnaly i think for the amount of effort to the catch results he told me he got, he would have be better off doing some fishing at Wagoe or the Cliffs just to the North of Wagoe. Or just go further north to Steep Point. But if its adventure your after, hell why not. I know you can 4x4 all the way from Murchison Station(just to the E of kalbarri town) when the river isnt flooded so you can cross it, all the way to Steep Point. Bit of a mission and you would probably want to do with a couple of 4x4's though, but man that would be an epic adventure.

Its very rough country, and while you can climb down at quite a few spots, NONE are safe with any more than the smallest swell.

A breakdown could mean a very long walk back to the highway. There is sporadic phone cover to kalbarri.

smash re the rough country and definatly zero swell to fish the ledges. Had those conditions 3 times for 2 days only then up it comes, out of nowhere.

Be really careful.

Spare tyres and a good two way radio is the go.

thanks fellas. yeah all are kind of confirming what i was thinking about limited fishing reward for a tone of effort. but still wouldnt mind having a look someday, just for the remote and harsh landscape and the possibility of finding a special fishing spot! always on the look out
