Nor West Blowies

Headed out from Ocean Reef last Saturday to try for Whiting. Normally fish 32 to 34 metres and dont have any problem catching. This trip however kept getting bitten off by Nor West Blowies. Got one to the surface to prove what they were and had a number of mangled and bitten off hooks as well

Any suggestions as to other areas / depths to try for a feed of whiting till these mongrels move away !

They are pricks of things.  We had them chasing our fish up and attacking them just 100m off the beach at hillarys.

the big question is

Has anyone or can you use a slab off the side off one for bait?

I am not 100% sure be perhaps you could cut some fillets off the side of one and send it back down deep as a bait?

thoughts??

Worth a shot at bait I

Worth a shot at bait I guess.

Would the toxins transfer if not completely removed before eating?

I went on a charter in Coral

I went on a charter in Coral Bay ages ago and one of the deckies chopped a fillet off one and used it as bait. I remember it worked well and no one got sick from eating the fish caught on it. I would probably be gutting anything you caught straight away though just to be sure.

Have definately used it for

Have definately used it for bait before, and caught too. Could be wrong but i think the poison is mainly in the skin (we removed the skin when using for bait).

Is kinda like a flathead, with the flesh running either side of the backbone

 Yeah these dam blowies have

Yeah these dam blowies have been showing up on the metro beaches lately. Its always amusing watching people fight a fish they think is a big tailor off the beach only to be disappointed when its landed. They are an absolute nuisance.

I've herd of people in boats

Wed, 2013-03-13 21:21

I've herd of people in boats after catching a couple they send a dead one out under a balloon or cokebottle

And the others follow it and eat that instead of the baits, may only work for shallow water?

Had one chase a fish around that I shot on a dive, came a bit too close and my dive buddy managed to poke it away and gave it a nice piercing
