Abrolhos Anchorages

Hi guys,

Planning a 5 day trip through the Abrolhos islands over easter.

Am captaining a 45ft Game boat and am a bit concerned over anchorages.

My base plan is to start at the southern group and to work my way north each day finishing on the northern group at the end of the trip.

Was hoping someone might be able to give me some good anchorage spots that they know of on the different islands. We are chasing mainly a sand bottom in reasonably shallow (3-5m) however really will take any good suggested spots you guys can offer. I have a fair bit of experience anchoring the big boats in normal conditions however I believe abrolhos is a case on its own with the wind. Blowing 40km is a great day out there.

Any advice on spots would always be appreciated in case we struggling to find somewhere ourselves.

Regards

Jd

Hey jd

Southern group is a bit of prick to anchor at. There is a good spot at the northern end of long ( pelseart) island between it and little island it's a nice little bay but it will be really busy on Easter weekend last year there was a half a dozen boats in there and a bit of prick to get into when there is swell. If it is windy you can always hide up on the inside  of long island that's a really good spot to anchor it takes a long time to get up there but because you have to go all the way up past dingsville island and past gun but the channel is marked pretty well and there is heaps of squid up there to. It's like 8 mile too the guano jetty and anchor there and you can catch a heap of herring at night for bait for the next day.

Around rat island there is public moorings to the north of of little rat

And around wallabies you can stay at the northern end of turtle island

All depends on wind man to what you can do hope that helps ya out a bit

Moorings

Fri, 2012-03-23 08:27

Thank for the info.

Is it likely that the public moorings will be available or being easter would they all be busy? I have never used the public moorings before in any of my trips

 Probably not but you can

Probably not but you can still throw the pick out around the area just be really careful there is so much shallow reef just stick to the main channels and don't follow other boats cause they all live there and know every bombie is. I lived there for 4 years and go back a couple of times a year and takes a good day to remember which side of the channel marker to stick too. Southern groups probably the worst for it too soon as ya head on the inside they just pop up everywhere there is a lot of old railway iron broken of at water level around dingsville too

 If no public moorings

Tue, 2013-03-26 01:12

If no public moorings are available, assess the prevailing

weather conditions before deciding on an anchorage.

Coral reefs and seagrass beds are important fish habitats.

They are easily damaged by boat anchors and anchor chains,

and are very slow to regenerate. Take care not to drop your

anchor on top of coral reefs – sand and mud will provide the

best hold the bottom.

Public moorings for overnight use are designed for

vessels up to 25 metres in length and up to 40 tonnes in

weight. However, ratings and condition of moorings cannot

be guaranteed.

An unmanned dinghy left tied to a mooring is not a

legitimate means of securing that mooring for the particular

use of an individual.
