Submitted by Pete D on Mon, 2007-07-16 08:15
First of all, many thanks to Andy, Tim and the sponsors for the event organisation.
Well, like a few others, it was a quite day for us. Soupster (Scott) managed a 6.66kg Dhuie and a nice KG. I managed undersize dhuies and pinky. Nice day on the water though.
Scott - loaded up...at last -
Dhuie, caught drift baiting.
The result -
Scott was a little anxious - 'Umm, would you mind getting the net....now!"
The crowd gathers -
Very friendly competition -
Rob on the phone (too busy to collect another prize!) -

Brain surgeon not! One of the sponsors - what was his name again?? -
Another winner - Luke -
Cody...aka 'KG slayer' -

Yeh!
Yeh well done to Andy & Tim, despite the wait (which was well worth it) certainly a comp like this wouldn't go ahead.....THANKS again and I'd be more than happy to Sponsor more in the future.

Nice pics Pete, Soupy's new drift bait outfit loaded up, very nice indeed and I wish I did drift baiting that day, I went for species but foresight a biatch....would of got more but ya get that.
Well done to all of the winners, plenty of prizes and yeh quiet day in comparison, the North current didn't help but......... thats fishing

funny you mention that
funny you mention that soupster as driftbaiting for me that day was the opposite. Right from the start used a drift bait with 5oz of lead in the form of a barrel sinker. 1st drop after about 2 mins i pulled in a pinky and thought great this is gonna be good. Next 4 hours got nothing, while the other 2 on the boat continued to pull in decent fish, using a paternosta.
Then the day before I used a drift bait and got 3 dhuies in the space of 1 hour and at the same time another person was using a paternosta and pulled in only 1 dhuie.

stupid question... what is
stupid question... what is "drift baiting" - im not too familiar with the term, considering I dont really go on boats very often...
I assumed that it was just having your bait drifting in the water without any weight, letting it sink.. however you mentioned something about 5 oz of lead? hmmmm?
might actually explain why when I do go out on a boat, i get absolutely nothing because all I ever use are paternosters lol

Sounds great
Great photos, sounds like a great day out. I had to watch many huge red emperor being brought into the ramps, oh how it hurt my feelings not to be out there doing it myself. Spose the saily sort of made up for it. Thanks for sharing the pics Pete.

The 'afters' were good as well
Adam catching the saily definitely made up for it and I enjoyed every minute showing you how it's done. But it wasn't bad having a beer or 3 back at Andy's after the comp being entertained by Shag and Ryan taking the p*** out of each other replaying the day. Especially after Shag won the p****** comp in the carpark by quite a few metres. That's not to say you're more full of p*** than Ryan Shag, just a better performance on the day.

LOL Shag
You don't have to worry about my mum, if you'd seen streetfighters antics at the last fishwrecked pub party you'd realise that you don't need to apologise for anything.

Don't bother Shag
If you had seen his Mum at the last party it was a toss up between her antics and streetfighters. Of course if she reads this I might be heading back up to Exmouth to catch another saily sooner than I expected. Hmmm........ now there's a thought that could be turned into a plan.

Drift Baiting versus Paternoster!
Yes a #5 bean sinker that weights approx 55 grams, yes bugger all but with a sea anchor and winds under 15 knots will allow the bait to get down to the strike zone but look more natural and enticing.
Dont get me wrong, I'll stand by the D/Baiting over paternoster but you can never say one will work better guaranteed....it's not that black and white. Wind, area, current, tide, bait and some luck can play a massive part, the key is to take both outfits with ya and diversify. For me I hardly get out my heavy paternoster gear but will do if it can benefit me, the drift baiting is a buzz!
