New wave buoys offshore of Watermans Bay and Sandpatch/Albany
Submitted by jhans on Tue, 2018-11-27 11:15
All,
UWA has recently developed a website (www.wawaves.org) to display real-time data from two wave buoys, one 10 km west of Watermans Bay and a second just offshore of Sandpatch in Torbay/Albany. We are also planning to deploy two additional buoys in the next ~6 months, one NW of Rottnest and second in deep water offshore of Albany/Denmark. All historic data can be downloaded from the website (free for non-commercial use). The data from these buoys is provided as a service to the community so please don’t run over, tie off to, or steal the buoys.
Enjoy!

No, we do research on coastal processes and though people would like acess to the data so they can decide if it is safe to go fishing or swimming.

Awesome, I don't think many people realise how fortunate we are in WA to have the UWA Oceans Institute and the insight they provide.

The boaty in me says well
The boaty in me says well done, sounds like a great resource for skippers.
The cynic in me is questioning why a research institute who gleefully accepts ‘research’ funding from a so called ‘charitable trust’ setup by big oil companies is collecting swell data off the southern coast where there are supposed enormous oil reserves..….

At one time, Albany was proposed to be th next major oil and gas hub with potentially significant volumes along a line from Albany to bass straight. Note that some drilling is scheduled to take place in the bight shortly.

I would say that's a very
I would say that's a very negative outlook.
But I agree that research usually happens with some sort of funding.
Would it make you feel any better if I said that I thought the research was sponsored by Carnegie energy looking at using wave energy to generate electricity?
Still have an environmental impact but no risk of an uncontrolled oil spill.

What's the bet the research conclusion details the need for marine park fishing lock outs?

That allows a bit of sneaky drilling if a few donations make their way into account X
