New rules
Submitted by fishfish on Mon, 2023-01-30 19:34
As we are all aware the new you beauty save the fish stock rules are to be introduced. Does anyone have reliable information that the new rules are to be implemented. Fisheries website has been updated for a while including the abrohlos changes but I haven't heard any official releases from government departments etc.
Anyone have links to the "Acts " passed or new laws / legislation etc ???
There was an add on mainstream radio few weeks back which I heard once but nothing since , you'd think they would be making people aware of the current changes.
Not even an email or pamphlet in the mail.
Cheers fishfish .

new rules
I spoke with fisheries a couple of weeks ago and they said that nothing had beengazzeted at the point, although they did state that the demersal extension would go ahead. No other rules had pass legisaltion at that point. And they didn't know when it would happen.

Still say other
Fish will be included . To help stock recover . Only guess and rumour . Fisheries compliance officers only follow what they get told to follow .some have no idea themselves ( no dig intended) . I’ve heard few good story’s to back up over last few weeks . Plenty of over things to chase and do . But remember one thing . Trials / temp bans/ and radio advertising ( remember it’s not for ever until 2030) new rules by then will get rid of 50 percent of stock ( small dhues) my thoughts looking after pro fisherman killing hundreds of small dhues ( let’s make money out of them rather than let them float ) everyone I know and fish with knows what they hook . No hurry steady and slow . They swim from top . It’s a load of crap . And all amateurs will be blamed in 2030 . They have no idea / no science just all guess work . How many places in metro can you buy fresh dhue fish fillets ( not many) where does it all go? Does government make loads of money out of industry ? Did they try do same on crayfish industry ? At least we can catch herring . Until G nets are allowed down south again . Bitch over . Not angry just a joke . Other hobbies on way

In any work place
They have rules and regulations . Easy to understand ( for new people to follow ) no ifs no buts . Road rules plane black and white ( easy) . Phone Mandurah/ Fremantle / Perth fisheries all different answers on certain things . Speak to different officers . All different opinions . Try it yourself , bloody hard to follow at times . I’ve seen many people over the years on fishing sites ask many questions about rules / regs ect . Doesn’t that say there is issue , should be plane black and white . For the uneducated people like myself .

No confusion here
I can clearly understand the new rules , what I'm specifically asking is no one seems to know whether they are being introduced. Have yet to receive an email back from fisheries and you either ring or ask the officers and you get different answers . So hence my question as to whether you can find a link to the laws / acts passed ??

this is what i was advised
The new fishing rules will be coming into play 1 February.
Parliament has given the Minister authority to make amendments to the Fish Resources Management Regulations 1995 under the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 therefore endorsement is given through the Minister’s signing of the new rules which occurred before his announcement in December.
New guides and web updates will be available closer to 1 February.

It does not necessarily
It does not necessarily require changes to any Act or via Parliament.
The Minister has discretion to implement most such changes.
Otherwise every time a local spped limit changes, or give way sign replaced with Stop would require a change.
Not agreeing with it but thats how it works

Those points are all super
Those points are all super grey areas Frosty and good questions that any fisheries officer wouldn't be able to answer. It's way too ambiguous imo.

You target your take home
You target your take home species as you wish Frosty, there's nothing to state hook size or depth.
You want to use 3 x 5/0 or 6/0 with bait for KG's and Sambos thats up to you, you know what your most likely going to catch though, lot less likely with smaller hooks for KG's and a jig for Sambo's. Still doesn't change the likely hood of catching demersal.
Can see you work local Gov though...image the size of the booklet and fine print required to cover people like yourself, stating a hook size and 1 of the many different types isn't going to clarify it either, just open it to more confusion.
Its not hard.

Ha Jack, my last dig went
Ha Jack, my last dig went straight over your head anyway so why bring that up...as much as BK is a bell end and thinks the world is flat like a few other on here you didn't need to start a new thread to ridicule him yeah ?...Were all special in our own way so be it.
To me its not grey at all, surely you understand why they added that line to the rules ? and do you think they can honestly police that or take it to court as it stands ? Its about doing the right thing to minimize damage and protect the demersal's every time your on the water.
Sounds like some speak to fisheries every second at there local ramp but myself in 10 years have only been stopped on the water once which was inside the sound checking licenses, catch size and numbers.
Apologies if I have hurt your feeling's in anyway.

Lol, geez you talk some shit.... I think you have me mixed up with PMac but happy for you to post up this imaginary invite.
Even if you ever were to come down to the gym a) there wouldn't be enough ink in the pen to fill out your medical form and b) I don't think zimer frames are allowed in the ring.

The rules aren't that hard
The rules aren't that hard to work out and follow,in general most aspects of the whole fishery is challenging to police so honesty plays a big part of things.Just my opinions, and I reckon if it becomes a too grey area and to hard to police the hook crisis they will amend the rules again with a blanket rule regarding number of hooks on a line

Lots of grey areas
Rules are pretty good to understand . I read them all the time . ( trust me) . They can be taken many ways . Jack Frost comments bang on the point . I always use double snelled live bait hooks .( small) they catch everything from big dhues to wrass . Deadly on big kgs . Going to be nightmare for fishos and fisheries . I still think there is more to come.

New rules and legislation now published
There is now a new Recreational Fishing Guide available on the Fisheries website;
www.fish.wa.gov.au/Documents/recreational_fishing/rec_fishing_guide/recreational_fishing_guide.pdf
Take a special note of the following paragraph (page 5) now included on high-grading;
"Don’t discard a smaller fish for a bigger one If you choose not to return a fish to the water immediately, you have taken that fish and it counts towards your daily bag limit.
It is illegal to keep fishing for the same category of fish after your bag limit is met.
Discarding a smaller retained fish for a bigger one is known as ‘high-grading’.
High-grading is not a responsible use of our fish resources – and if you have already taken your daily bag limit, it will result in you exceeding the daily bag limit."
And the legislation has also been revised;

This is the answer from my
This is the answer from my local MLA who I've been in touch with since the first murmers of changes began. Couple of interesting things out of it:
1) All you have to do is say you are targetting KGW and you can happily fish with 3x 7/0 hooks in whatever depth you like. This will be a clustertruck when Fisheries book someone legitamitely targetting KGW with three hooks in 30-40m and they have to prove in court they weren't targetting demersals.
2) DPIRB have somehow ascertained that rec fishers are killing 18,500 dhufish per year on release in the West Coast Bioregion.
For the record Brock, I generally fish light with a jig, drift bait rig or a Bottom Meat/Mad Dog hybrid for demersals and set up my kids with single hook paternoster rigs to avoid tangles and use a single hook when when targetting KGW so the new rules don't really bother 'people like myself'.
Thank you for your patience while our office sought further advice from the Minister and Department of Fisheries. The following information was provided in response to your questions:

The way I see it is that
The way I see it is that haven't really adressed "high grading" and barotrauma, any small/smaller bangers will be thrown back knowing you can catch 4 "bigger" one's

Maybe. But plenty of little dhu are pulled out of shallow water while whiting or flathead fishing. And they would of usually gone back but wont now.

I have caught alot of dhues
I have caught alot of dhues in the 45-51cm range in less than 12m fishing for snapper until now these fish were not legal to keep, but in my opinion would have an excellent chance of survival. If I am catching alot of these I'm sure many others are too, I can't see myself keeping them even when new rules let us fish again but I'm sure you can imagine how many of these fish are going to be removed from the system.
rather be fishing
