New batteries
Submitted by Alan James on Mon, 2018-03-05 18:33
After my boat being idle in storage for too long I now need to replace the batteries. The storage company has recommended Power Crank Batteries who they deal with frequently and they have provided me with a quotation for a pair of Power Crank N70ZZCMF (850CCA) batteries. Motors and associated electrics are not my forte so I thought I would ask if anyone has any positive or negative comments / experiences with respect to Power Crank batteries.

Bottom line Alan unless
Bottom line Alan unless buying the real fancy ones, is
Ring Battery World or one of those and get a price also
They have probably died from discharging, but do you know they are dead or have the storage mob just told you so?

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll call the suppliers mentioned. Rob whilst I haven't personally tried to recharge the existing batteries it comes as no surprise that they are dead. The storage company tried to recharge them unsuccessfully as did Power Crank.

New Batteries.
Alan, If it's not too late, I'd want to confirm just how my boat was wired up, particularly if I hadn't done it myself. You may be better off with a combination of cranking and deep cycle batts. You did mention you weren't that familiar with things electrical. I do know that using an incorrect batt for a given task (eg starting as opposed to running an Engel) will give you shorter batt life and sub standard performance.

Once again thanks for the feedback guys. As mentioned by Vinesh87 and Backlash Goodchilds provide very competitive prices and they will get my business. I seem to recall reading somewhere that it was recommeded to coat the battery terminals and connectors with vaseline ...... ?? Good idea??

How did you go pricewise
How did you go pricewise Jamsey? I'm going to replace my Century batteries as they would occasionally give a low voltage alarm on starting the outboard even after driving around all day and being kept on trickle charge at home. One is almost 3 years old and the other is almost 2.
Looking to get some better quality batteries like Optima or Bosch

Just be aware that leaving
Just be aware that leaving them on trickle all the time will mask a problem-ie you wont know they are shit until they ARENT on trickle.
Which could be your first long drift/anchor when you get out there!

Goodchild
The keenset prices were from Goodchild. I purchased two HCM31 CCA830 - M3 Bosch Hi Cycle Marine Batteries for $170.50 each. Quality wise I don't really know how these compare to others. Time will tell.

I don't think Bosch are
I don't think Bosch are better quality than Century. I've bought a couple from Goodchild and think they are average. The optima are probably on a different level of quality but much more expensive..

Wouldn't worry about that. I
Wouldn't worry about that. I also use to get it. Its mainly voltage drop from to small gauge wire from battery. I uped the gauge of the twin core and the alarm went away.

Bosch are def not in the
Bosch are def not in the same league as optima/ssb amd the likes. In saying that i cant fault my Bosch batteries in my excavator/tractor
Remeber you have a long piece of possibly small cable to your sounder. Could be 12.7v at your battery amd 12.2 at your sounder?
