We have just done our prestart with our builder, we live in meadow springs and the nbn will be up and running by the time we have the house built.
They said we need a bronze cable pack as a minimum, this will cost $2500. Very confused about it all the guy new what he was talking about but just not sure if that is the normal price?.

Bronze Cable Pack?
The very essential NBN is a roll out of Optic Fibre to the home - so not sure what the Bronze Cable Pack is - check out this page http://www.nbnco.com.au/getting-connected/home-and-business.html
And Rick, I won't agree I worked for Telstra for 7 years in Internet Provisioning, Ecommerce, HTTPS SSL payment gateways etc. There are MANY good reasons why the NBN, properly rolled out (fibre to the home vs fibre to the node) will be a HUGE and essential step forward.
Anyone in the country knows that Telstra has an absolute strangle hold on the copper, optic and wireless infastructure.
We need a level playing field, when Telstra was sold as a cash cow, we got it as wrong as so many other places on the globe (the definition of insanity is expecting a different result from the same repeated process).
We SHOULD have retained a single network, with all telcos on the same level playing field, and sustained a single ubiquitous infastructure underpinned by a community service obligation - not shareholder dividends.
The NBN will, in amongst so many other advantages, restore that level playing field.
Soon to be de "dreamweaver" ed!

bronze pack
the builder is either offering a bronze,silver or gold pack to set up the NBN. They said the bronze pack is $2500, i have read alot on the net with lots of confusing info about the nbn. some people say it will be set up for free, that is probably for established houses?

There is alot of confusion about NBN alright.
My understanding is you can get it set up for free but that will mean they put the 2 control boxes on the wall directly inside where the cable enters the house. This would mean for most people Master Bedroom or Lounge Room.
The builder is charging you to wire the house to a certain level (Gold/Silver/Bronze). You should ask what you get for each level.
Once they roll out NBN to each suburb they will shut down ADSL connection after a period of time so you will have no choice. Certainly would be worth planning this as it will be much messier and more expensive to alter in the future.

Yeah they are putting a box in the garage ,they guy from hillside wasvery good in explaining it all ( although most of it went straight over our heads)
this is what i found on the net for the bronze pack.
The pack description is as follows:
FIBRE OPTIC BRONZE PACK
Includes the following:
- Conduit,
- Earthing of ONT & leading in cables
- Double power point for PSU
- Hub Enclosure
- 2 No. telephone points — Master Suite(x1) & kitchen(x1)
- 2 No. T.V. points — Master Suite(x1) & living/theatre(x1)

Thats the stuff that people dont realize they wont get included with NBN.
Atm you could have phone points etc all over the house. Under NBN they all go back to the box.
If you dont get it put in when building it will get messy and your phone and router (need a new special one too) will have to be located at the box they mount rather than where you want it.
You could always look around and see what others are offering. Plenty of guys around who can work in with the builders.

We need the NBN... Our Current infrastructure will not support the consumer requirements of tomorrow. Look at the shift we have seen in the past 5 years in regards to technology and what we expect as consumers expect. The NBN will allow for this future growth and will also keep us in line with the rest of the world, and as Dreamweaver pointed it out it will provide competition and reduce the strong hold Telstra has on the market.

Well i can't wait for the NBN our ADSL2 in Vic park is horrible, 4G is 20 x faster. And seeing as i am a sparky/comms i dont care about the extra stuff you need but i could see it becoming fairly costly !!

Around about $80 a month with telstra give or take your bundles some look around $49 but a bit higher in the fine print + $300 install.
Plus what ever extra cabling need to be done, this thread is the first i have heard of all this cabling, time will tell!!

Wireless, in its many flavours, is not up to replacing wired links and this will never change. The spectrum would just be so so flogged.

America is not the rest of the world, but it is home to a lot of stupid decisions too ;)
They must be very hopeful to think that they solve existing capacity constraints on wireless before 2022.
There are already many different types of wireless and even a place as small as perth you can find that in some areas, the spectrum is already flogged.

most of europe,n america and asia are going for FFTx
which supposely gets over the barrier etc problems of wireless, lot more to play out here,nmb cost will still be rising, don't think the yanks make the only dumb decisions,why buy a boat from there,maybe its a dumb boat

I heard on the radio the other day that in some European countries you can link your smart phone to your credit/debit cards and swipe the phone at point of sale eliminating the actual cards. Don't know how this works security wise but it's seems to be the way things will go in the future.

I think the first really successful cash card was the HK Octopus, and that tech got rolled into the UK Oyster card. Its being pushed into phones with the NFC chips.
Not sure I'm so convinced about it myself.

Broadband
Whats this broadband you guys talk about? We barely get 3g in our area - less then 6km from Perth CBD....and are not even on the 3 year plan for NBN...this really is a 3rd world country
in regards to basic infrastructure.

Contractor told me yesterday that NBN is being overlooked in Karratha? He was here to mess with our new underground cabling, and I asked about NBN. He said we wont be getting it???????????

We have fibre to our home in baldivis, all the builder had to do is run all pone, internet and tv points back to the garage (e.g. only connect one end of each) and place a power outlet in the garage for the telstra box. Telstra then came and connected all of them up and installed the box outside and the box inside the garage. This gost me $250 once I asked telstra to connect the phone line, once that is paid they give you $1500 credit to go towards your phone and internet bills.

I had a look on the rollout map and baldivis is not on the plan yet? so why have you got fibre set up already?
It is all very confusing, we are getting ours setup for the nbn which has already started in meadow springs. There is a seminar at the shopping centre on thursday, so i will be finding out more then. I will see if they are ripping us off or if it will be the normal setup?

sounds a bit steep
data points tv points conduit even a data cabinet and patch panel are all very cheap. ring MM electrical
wholesalers to price up the bits ie wall box plate and rj 45 mech with a couple of metres of conduit
about $20 or less cat 6 cable probably less than a dollar a metre or ask your sparky for a price per
data point

I agree with fishy fingers, the builder can just put blanking plates and conduit where you want all your phone, internet, tv etc. my place is evermore heights in baldivis which is part of the nbn, we have fibre through the whole estate, which by the way the builders love to destroy when putting the driveway in!
