my new 2 piece popper rod is stuck together - need advice

G'day guys,

I've got a bit of problem and hoping one of you will have the answer.

I've got my new 2 piece stick stuck together, I dont know if its a suction thing or just force. its a popping rod so the second piece goes into the butt.

Will putting protection like a towel over the graphite and then using some lock grips to give it a twist be OK?

any first hand advice would be great??

cheers

Gently Gently

If you have a vice then pad the butt and secure it. Then gently work the tip end to see if you can get movement. The other way is to get someone to help you and hold the butt end while you try to free up the join.

You can

put an icepack or something very cold on the join for a minute or 2 to cool it right down and that should release the join.

Worked for me.

I would go with twisting.

I cant agree with using ice, but gently warming it may be an easier option.

I'm with Matt - had exactly the same problem and cooling definately worked for me.  It was in summer though and going into the air-con (difference of ~10-15oC) worked in a minute

Stuck Rod

Mon, 2011-08-01 14:29

Step 1. Get some form of soft rubber stripping (like a bike tyre tube) and rap it up around the blank. Make the wrap long enough so that you can use 2 hands to grip the blank. This will give you a good grip and then get someone else to hold the butt.

Step 2, twist.

Step 3, dont put it back together too tightly next time :)

Yes all of the above are good recommendations, but recommend strongly against the vice grip idea!

I've found the elastic trick always works for me.

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Vice grip idea

Mon, 2011-08-01 18:11

And why would you recommend against that? It's something I have used over the years and I have a few years up my sleeve mate. Like everything, you think it through and do what the brain suggests without a chance of damage. I did suggest in my post that you should pad the butt. I wasn't suggesting that you should crush the rod FFS.

Vince, the original post mentioned lock grips and you mentioned a vice. You then engaged thin skin mode and got up the bloke, maybe he wasnt even aiming his comment at you ??

OH really?

What is happening here? So I am thin skinned? I got up the bloke? Maybe he wasn't aiming comments at me? Go tell.... Are you guys forming some sort of censorship pact here?

I made a post here that I thought was very informative and from a bloke that is 55 years of age and has a long history of fishing. Not to mention a brain as well.

I wouldn't like to drink with you guys and walk out together. It seems I would need some minders.

My comment was aimed at the vice grips / lock grips.

Not the vice.

Maybe read more closely before firing up.

Use a hacksaw, but make sure

Mon, 2011-08-01 19:19

Use a hacksaw, but make sure you use a half blunt blade to prevent splintering the graphite, wrap the designated place to cut (roughly half way along rod) with some insulation tape tightly. Make the cut and then cut another 10 to 15 mm (depending on blank taper) off one end. The tip end should now fit into the the butt end, problem solved, youve got your 2 piece rod back.

carby cleaner is very good for loosening tight/seized joints. Try it and see how you go and once re-leased use some cutting compound to remove any corrosion and rough bits then finnish with a polish. Use a non seizing agent to prevent it happening again. Have been using this method for yrs on re-builds.

Cheers

Seriously add some crc or tackle gaurd to the joint and twist, gripping near the joint. Carb cleaner is pretty savage stuff, if you get it on places you dont want, like the blank coating or annodised alum itll eat it

I have had the same problem before, once you get it sorted (i left inside air con for a day) then twisted below the first guide and the but (two person job) buy yourself some rod wax, its purpose is to prevent this from happening.  Best $7 i ever spent.  pm me if you would like more info

Try putting on a dishwashing rubber glove. It is amazing how well you can then grip the blank.

Once you have it apart definately use some wax as Brad suggests.

THanks Guys,

Got it out.

I ended up wrapping the butt section in a towel and put it in a vice. Then I got some Ice on the joint and then used a bike tyre inner tube to wrap around the blank and twist. It started moving and came out without any fuss.

I'll definately be getting some wax thanks Brad. The last thing I want to happen is be in the same predicament when coming back from a trip and not be able to get it in the rod bag to send back.

cheers again boys ! :)

Now to Stop It Happening Again

Tue, 2011-08-02 18:19

I've always been told not to use a liquid like WD40 as a preventative antisieze as it can induce a bit more suction than you'd like. I've always thought graphite powder was the way to go and no fancy fishing-rod specific wankery around it.

Probably dangerous to use the term fancy fishing-rod specific wankery on a fishing forum, tempted to guess how many thin skinned people will take offense.

As far as Vince getting a bit miffed, reckon its not a bad idea to avoid suggesting people get crushing implement like multigrips near their rods, simply because even a clever person does overtighten things every now and then. Been there, cracked that.

For those who are not follicly challenged, just rub the Ferrule around in your hair prior to assembly and the natural oil will be enough to stop future sticking

It was recommended then to rub the male ferrule (then metal) against the side of your nose to get the natural oils.  Whether this works on non metal ferrules I don't know.
