Bit windy for snapper last nite - so I went to the barges instead (PGFC Social Nite)
Well, last nite was not the nite to have a crack at the snapper, so I went along to the PGFC Social Nite at the RPYC Annex down in Mews Road, Fremantle.
They had Jeremy Green, head of Maritime Archaeology at the WA Museum down to talk about the barges aka the Rottnest Deepwater Graveyard. I think its the second time that he has given the talk publically, it was offered once at the State Library of WA, and sold out there in a couple of days as well.
A bit different from heading down to the barges for a fish, the talk was on why there were so many ships were in the area and the fish were pretty much incidental.
The area was designated a dumping area in the 30's, because the government was concerned about the boats being stripped, and then simply abandonded on the shore. Later, after WWII, ships, munitions and trucks were dumped there at the end of the lend-lease program.
They had some interesting images of the area, through aerial magnetometer survey, some fantastic video of the wrecks themselves via submersible and tech divers.
Following that, Rhyss Whittred from Taylor Marine, Australia's Furuno Agent, ran a few WASSP demos while we enjoyed a chat, pizza and a few beers!
Pop over to the PGFC and see what they're up to, its not just the FADs, and they're active over winter when its sometimes hard to get out for a fish.
Don're forget to check their new website!

The WW2 lease ending thing is a very interesting subject.
The Seppos stayed out of WW2 until the Brits (including it's commonwealth buddies -----include Oz) were desperate, and agreed to lease war machinery off the good hearted tin tanks so that the rednecks would join the war Part of the agreement was apparently that at the end of the war, all the gear had to be destroyed, no matter the state. What this meant was that the Brits etc would then have to repurchase any new gear back from the yanks post war, keeping the US economy strong. They also negotiated everything in US dollars, effectively sealing the US currency as the default world currency that we have had to this day........although that grip is slipping.
Interesting stuff, and a contributing factor to why there is a lot of metal sitting in the graveyard. So, when out at the barges next and hook onto a sambo, tip your hat to good ol uncle Sam.

sub wreck not the k9
In the late 50s and 60s there was alot of old ordnance and barges ships etc dumped in this "official" dumping area. When I was a youngster there used to be a submarine tied up at a jetty near where thr cockburn power boat club is, this submarine was there in the late 50s and gained a mention in the "daily News" news paper when the oil drilling ship/platform BP Endevor or a similiar sounding name was constructed at a site near the jervis bay cove and cockburn road intersection this was in the late 60s i believe. Between the late 50s and late 60s this submarine sunk at the jetty, the underwater explorers club used to advertise dives on the wreck. Now when they came to launching the oil rig/ship the sub wreck was in the way for the trench they had to dig to get the oil rig launched. Does anyone know the location of this wreck.
NO IT IS NOT THE DUTCH SUB K9
Verification of the above facts can be obtained by any old members of the underwater explores club and by reaserching the old papers about the first construction of an oil rig/ship in WA.
I have been told that the sub wreck was towed out of the way and covered by sand but this hasn't been confirmed
Any old timers got any information on the location of this wreck.
