I have spent the last 18

I have spent the last 18 months targetting them after getting my first off Wedge to whet the appetite.

Consensus seems to be fish as light as possible as mulloway can be a very tentative fish and drop the bait if they feel resistance. I try to use a big ball sinker with a long trace when fishing in the surf (which is where I typically target them).

A typical rig for me would be -

---mainline with running sinker ---- <swivel> ----40lb / 60lb long leader ------- 2x 7/0 - 9/0 hooks in snell arrangement

Bait is important. Always use the freshest bait possible and preferably a live bait. Your bait must be suitable for the area you are fishing too - so use what you catch in that area!

I normally fish just after the new moon. But from my experiences to date, bar my initial fluke...the mulloway is a MYTH...it does not exist!!! lol

Ive had very good success in

Ive had very good success in the last 2 years. Have got around 20 mulloway, 5 over 10kg. Agree on the freshest baits but. Went again last night and got a big run 2nd cast, but bent hooks straight and pulled them.

50lb on 12foot overhead

Sun, 2011-04-03 08:06

50lb on 12foot overhead tiralejo. rod is rated to 40lb but i use the 50lb for bit bigger diameter. They were 3/0 mustad tarpons too, they are forged. Havent bent them straight too many times before. Had difficulty bending them back thats for sure. Was using californian squid on a gang.

fresh bait berley the right

Sun, 2011-04-03 18:35

fresh bait berley the right tides and fishing light all work. ok ive only caught 2 but from research ive done most seem to be caught following those methods. do a search on old posts and check dates of fish caught against a tide website a pattern will start to emerge if you look hard enough.
