Coral Bay Trip & BBQ

 Hi All,

Would like to share my very interesting trip to coral bay recently. A couple of mates & I fished CB for three days with a nice mixed bag of emperors & tried our luck for a marlin. Majority of the trip was dedicated to bottom bashing with a little bit of trolling between spots, we only trolled for a 4 -5 hrs for the whole trip and managed to raise 5 marlin, hooked three & got one to the boat as well as a nice little dolly. So needless to say we were pretty happy with our efforts as none of us had fished CB before and are keen to go back there and spend more time dragging skirts around.

Now this is where the trip got interesting, on the way back to home we were about 150klms south of Carnarvon when I noticed that there was smoke coming out from the rear of the car, we pulled over and found that there was diesel gushing from the rear of the engine and then as my mate said, that is least of your worries as it is on fire, SHIT, raced to the boat to get the fire extinguisher to find that it was missing, so grabbed all the water we had & tried to fight the fire with no success. Time to make the call, get what possessions we could out of the car & get the boat off before we had more dramas on our hands. So to cut a really long story short a 12hr trip turned into 21hr journey of hitching rides in road trains & people that just wanted to help.

I must thank the two guys that pulled up to give us hand & tow my boat to Wooramel roadhouse after unhitching their boat & doing a 90klm round trip.

Saw the pic of the burnt out wreck in the local paper up here, not a good look thats for sure but great to hear there wasn't anyone injured.

Puts a sour taste in your mouth after what looks to have been a good fishing trip to lose the car and some belongings.

From looking at some of the fish pics you had trouble with the grey coat brigade up there.

CRIPES

Did you manage to get your catch out and away from the flames or was that all over too???

On the bright side, it happened on the way home.... no one got hurt you got to meet some new people and you have a good story to tell.

Hope the insurance comes the part quickly

Chris

Yeah good to see no one was

Yeah good to see no one was hurt. Did you find out what caused the leak? I know pretty hard with it being burnt to the ground, but being a new car maybe a manufacturing fault.

 well done on the fishing

Sat, 2011-04-02 16:47

well done on the fishing front but not so good on the way home. as others have said , at least nobody got hurt. belongings can be replaced but lives cant be and burns stay with you for life.

I thought i had a bum deal on the way home from CB with busting an axle on the boat trailor. on the bright side, you should get a new 4x4 if its under waranty.

 The car was a late 2008 D3

Sat, 2011-04-02 17:22

The car was a late 2008 D3 with 46000k's, and they have reputation for catching on fire due to the high pressure fuel pump failing. The most disappointing part is that LR know about it & have had 2 recalls on them & the last one came out in November 2010. I had it service 3 weeks prior to the trip hence when I got the first chance I contacted the LR dealer that serviced it & asked them why the pump was not replaced & if they would like to I would make arrangements for them to fit it to the burnt out wreck

Yes, all fish made it home & we did have troubles with the grey suits but all in all it was good fishing.

Now time to find a new car to tow the boat before all that warm water decides to p##s off.

canyonero!

Sun, 2011-04-03 00:30

Hope its not too soon! first thing i thought of was shit good thing no1 got hurt, then... "unexplained fires are a matter for the courts! canyoneeeero canyonero!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4QgWRycd7I&feature=related

Seriously though thats complete crap that a car.. a family car, can be produced that can just burst into flames like that and nothing be done about it except issuing a recall that the buyer has to research and find out their own way, you would think the company should have an obligation to contact every buyer that has purchased the vehcile to have it corrected. Where does the company stand if someone gets burnt to death from their fault? What if it was a young family with a driver not observant enough to notice his car is on fire!

In no way a rant about your choice of 4wd teto or aimed at landrovers, just can't believe in this day a car company can be allowed to produce a car that spontaneously combusts and have so little responsibility about it.

Just a good thing you guys made it out ok without losing the boat aswell.

Man its after midnight now i'm all worked up about exploding cars!

Far out.. that sucks!! Looked to be a pretty nice ride beforehand anyways.

Atleast you got the boat and some of your gear out of the firing line.
