Metro Salmon reports

Has anyone heard of any salmon sightings in the Metro area?
A mate of mine fished at Yanchep yesterday and there were reports of some small schools passing through.
He tried a few casts with mulies at one school but they weren't interested and were't hanging around.
All the best, Colin Hay

I was out walking on

Mon, 2008-03-31 09:48

I was out walking on Saturday evening along the walk/bike trail just south of Hillary's with the wife.  We saw a pod of dolphins no more than 100meters off the beach that seemed to be working a school of fish.  I could see a dark mass moving north, with the dolphins keeping them together.  Don't know if they were salmon, but it was pretty cool to watch!

3-4 weeks late this year

Mon, 2008-03-31 11:31

Spent all weekend at Injidup/Mitchells and based on what I saw there, don't expect them anywhere near Perth in decent numbers for 3-4 weeks.

Saw my first decent school yesterday. Big and they were near the surface and taking slices as usual.

Slices usually kill the pig here, but no one hooked a fish on a slice until this largish school came through around 1pm.

Before this, they were staying quite deep, even when in casting range and moving around a lot at speed. Only in pods of 20 fish at most.

They were often spooked by 20,000 (ok, slight exaggeration) lures hitting them all at once and also by inconsiderate boaties. Three times I saw someone drive a boat right on top of the school and then look at us on the beach saying 'where are the fish'? Retards.

Not much fishing decorum down there, people casting over you left, right and centre, even when you are hooked up and boaties spooking small schools and often dragging them out of casting range.

I think you are right Simmo. They do look to be behind schedule. Could be good for the school holidays.
I can't believe what some "supposed" fishermen will do. Where has all the fishing etiquette gone. It will end up like Fraser Island in Queensland where, when the tailor run is on, people drive up and down in 4wd's and when someone -who has been tossing a line out all morning - hooks a fish and they all charge down and stand shoulder to shoulder with him.

Fast fish rule!
Guys, what you see fishing is just a reflection of the Human? race at the moment, wont be long until fishing Rage catches up with us! Glad I started many years ago when it was easier to get on with the world.

Weekend salmon

Mon, 2008-03-31 16:56

Saw plenty of schools over the weekend slowly working their way up the cape to cape stretch. Plenty of dolphins around, pushing them in close to shore. I had success on roostas, Fatr's and raiders.

harro was saying last week he saw a few schools around canal rock..... i'm goin down there with a mate in 2 weeks to have a shot and to get out on harro's new rig....

this bit of rough weather should stir up the big schools a bit so hopefully by the time im down there the salmon will be in big and thick..... probably try yallingup beach, the old favourite spot...just have to get there early to beat the floods of people

around augusta and hamelin

Mon, 2008-03-31 23:51

around augusta and hamelin there was quiet alot of broken up schools in there 60s-100s moving through i couldnt tell you how long till they hit perth cause the silly bugers wernt in much of a hurry and they seemed to be moving north then turning around and coming back. in the mornings i found the salmon would hit the popers hard and 50 gram slice then towards 10.00-4.00 oclock wouldnt touch nothing but live herrin the many moods of salmon.

Went snorkelling at mettams pool last wednesday for school and stumbled across a school of about 50 salmon. Followed them for ages around the reefs and stuff.

If your fair dinkum head for the chicken run off the West End of Rotto. Probably the most reliable metro spot IMO. Mind you if they are there, then there should be some around Coventry.
