mandurah estuary popping
Submitted by Lowza on Tue, 2016-02-09 21:16
Looking for some new spots to try in the Mandurah estuary for whiting on poppers. My usual spots of the serpentine river mouth flats and owen street (Novara)aren't producing the usual herring and tings.
Can anyone recommend other spots to go within the industry looking at going this weekend :) Any suggestions appreciated.

I see lots of whiting around
I see lots of whiting around south yunderup when scooping for crabs and it should be around the right depth but I have never seen people popping there (only been there 3 times though)

Been a quiet season...
...at all my usual haunts. Had a couple of pearlers (20 fish+) back in October but it's been drips and drabs ever since. I'm not on FB but apparently there's been a lot of fishing pressure reported on there and my fears of people going stupid with the 30 YFW bag limit might be well-founded.
Here's hoping that someone will come on to this thread with reports of more consistent catches throughout the summer!

My mate who fishes for yellow fin in the ocean down Mandurah hasn't had much luck either all summer. Been seeing a few but not like last year.

Season started early and
Season started early and fired for a few months. Last few years ive noticed as soon as you get all the 2 inch whiting in the shallows the bigger ones are more up and down

Went down yesterday
Conditions were perfect, little bit of wind went on the high tide.
4th cast had a really good ting on around 32cm.
Very quiet, after that probably around 4 of 5 follows and couple of strikes for no hook ups.
After an hour or so a lure change to something with a more aggressive/gulp splash got another even bigger one around 35cm.
Only two fish landed but at least the size was really good they go so hard on the light gear good fun!
