Livebaiting With A Jigging Rod?

Curious to know if anyone is using their jigging rod to livebait with?

I know people use 50lb jigging rods such as the 6ft 3" Hiramasa's for livebaits but im curious to know if a shorter 80lb jig stick such as the 5ft 6" Monster Mesh Max or Catalinas could double as a livie stick?

Ive seen a few shows lately where people are using short Shimano Jigwrex's on bluefin tuna... so wondering if the same theory could apply to livebaiting kings.

Ive got a heavy overhead combo as my go-to livie setup, but considering doubling a jigging combo as a backup.

The reel will likely be a Saragosa 18,000 running 80lb.

Any thoughts?

You can use pretty much any

You can use pretty much any outfit for anything, once the fish is in it doesnt matter if it was hooked jigging, trolling or with a livey. Labeling a rod jig, troll ar livebait is just a ploy by the manufacturers to sell more rods I reckon.

There's a world of difference

There's a world of difference between most jig rods and trolling rods. It's not just a marketing ploy. You can use either for either but they're not as ideal as using the right rod for the application. You can still drive a tarago around a racetrack ;)

For livebaits, it would depend on whether you need to cast. When you're on the fish, it generally won't matter it's a jig rod. It will be easier and more suited if the fish are deep. However if the fish are out from the boat, jigging rods aren't as good as other rods IMO. Also keep in mind that if the drag is set high and a fish strikes while the rod is in the rod holder it can be harder to remove quickly. Also, some jigging rods split grips means the blank rests agsinst the edge of the rod holder . Overheads can be more suited to live baiting as you can leave them in freespool with the clicker on. Also, if the rods 80lb it might not load up much depending on the size of the fish you're catching. Doesn't stop you from using it though. Try it out and see if it performs as you like.

Agree with marble Mainly but

Agree with marble Mainly but in my opinion I like a softer tip on the rod, allows the angler to see if the bait is still kicking and absorbs some of the lunges. Helps to keep the bait on a bit better since the rod takes the blows and doest rip the hook out of the bait.

pe5 would be the go

I think monster mesh max xhs are a bit stiff for live baiting maybe a mhs would do, but still would work and you wouldnt be using liveys all the time only occasionaly!!! Otherwise i think it would be a awesome jig setup though, i only use pe3 gear for liveys unless its sambo season pe5 comes out,

why not

as mentioned above, once the fish is hooked you want best 'fighting " outfit so whether its a  "jigging" outfit doesn't matter , take last sambo season for example we "livebaited" for all our sambos and "outfished every boat we saw over 3 trips and we fished all our livebaits over various "jigging"style outfits with rods shorter then 6' feet. i've used my "jigging' style outfits for livebaiting,  large sharks, bottom bouncing, trolling and everything in beetween . why not!!!  cheers

Great feedback guys, thanks.

I realistically only jig once or twice per year so its good to know that i can use the outfit for other applications.

Appreciate it.
