Live Bait

How do you guys set up your live bait ?

I have trouble keeping bait live when using two hooks like the image I uploaded.

whats the best way to hook them up, I was hooking them up via the nose area, which seem to work very well a couple of nights ago, Tailor seem to get loose when hooking up via the nose, is it best to hook up along the back bone area ?

Any tips on the subject would be great

I'm going to use single hook

I'm going to use single hook for the nose area for yellow tail, and I'll use double hooks for the Tailor, some one has shown me another way to hook up a live Tailor.

with barra we use a single

Wed, 2009-02-04 19:23

with barra we use a single hook (usually an 8/0) gamakatsu SL12's and pierce the "livie" just in front of the dorsal fin, well above the backbone more litterally just like a piercing. We find even with whiting, bonies, mullet they all keep well and swim in a more natural action. If the current s a pain in the bum i will generally "nose" hook them but if thats the case i will generally pack up and troll.
Hope this helps a bit

Nose hook

Just about exclusively used the nose hook method for barra when I lived in Knx. Worked a treat but you had to careful casting them out, really more of a gentle lob or feeding them back with the current.

Lots of tidal movement up there. Majority of time I tried lightly pinning them through the back saw the current pull them to the top quick smart.

On the turn of the tide though lightly back hooked baits under a small piece of styrofoam floated into the snags didn't last long.

yeah had a mate that used to

yeah had a mate that used to fish with styrofoam. He used to hook a trebble through the back and flick his line out into the snags on styrofoam and count to ten.
Sounded like good fun, didnt really like the idea of a gut hooked barra on a trebble however, allright if your going to keep it is suppose

Hook your live baits alot

Wed, 2009-02-04 20:51

Hook your live baits alot lighter and they last alot longer, i lightly pierce mine and they stay alive for hours. If anythings big enough to take it they will just swallow the whole thing not bite the hooks out.
