LBG @ 1770

G’day, hopefully someone can shed some light.

In late November I’m off to Seventeen Seventy (near Gladstone, Qld) for some LBG.

My dilemma is that I want to invest in a “gun” reel.

The obvious options are;  the stellas, 18000hg or 20000pg,  the latter,  (which from what I understand), doesn’t come in a High Gear model just the power gear. For spinning I’d assume the 18000hg would be a better option.

OR.. the Daiwas. Dogfight or Z6500. All of them seem like more than capable reels.

The question is I suppose, If you were to spend around the $800- $1000 for a used or new reel, what would your weapon of choice be? (the reel will also be used for some offshore jigging down the track)

last time the boys were up there, they got busted by a Cobia and a big king. its the sort place you could hook a 20-30kg Kingy or even a good size yellowfin.

i just want to be ready..

Lol pain

New age you must like pain.  I have caught shitloads of sambos on short boat rods (a good challenge), then I caught a few off the beach on 13ft rods wow what a difference the longer the rod the more leverage the fish has on you, world of pain.

If your targeting gamefish you won't go wrong with a dogfight. Maverick or any other hi speed saltiga.  As for Stella's I haven't ever owned one but no doubt are up to it.  If you really want to save some coin a saltist 6500 is high speed and fairly robust cheaper option to a saltiga but with less drag.

thinking i should be looking for a 10k stella with a bigger spool as, thankfully Shark1 has informed me that the big stellas are just way too big for spinning all day.

A mate has also told me that when push comes to shove its the stella over the saltiga. Dont want to cause a stir but I think I'm going for a Stella 10k with a 16k spool.

Thankyou all for you feedback

I don't know much about the Shimano reels, but if you do go with a Daiwa I would go for the 4500 size I think the 6500 is a bit big to spin all day with. Also get a higher speed reel if you can it definitely helps with spinning lures.

There was a review by Alan Hawk where he said that the Catalina reels are functionally the same as the Saltigas but quite a bit cheaper. I would definitely get one of them over the Saltiga if you want bang for buck.

Like Rig said the Saltist is the cheaper Daiwa option.

Dont reinvent the wheel. The favoured combo amongst spinning (GT Popping) enthusiasts globally is clearly the Stella 10,000 with a 16,000 spool.

The only thing in my mind which might change that is the introduction of the new Stella - but the only change that might make is that you just buy the 14,000 size to begin with and then no need to worry about the spool upgrade.

Cahal's one that he's selling in the forsale section is exactly what I'd suggest and would buy it myself at that price if I didn't have a couple already.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
