Kalbarri boat fishing
Submitted by clogwog on Tue, 2018-01-16 15:53
Hi.
Looking to do a quick trip up to Kalbarri with the. family next week. I've been up a few times and fished from the shore but never done any fishing from the boat. (18 foot pacemaker)
Can someone confirm the likely target species at this time of year and also give some direction on areas that fish well. (Not looking for your specific spots) any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Marty

Entrance to river
Not sure about what being caught or where to go but take care through the enterance to the river. I was up there a few weeks ago and was watch a number of vessels heading out whilst fishing Frustraion Reef. Some days looked a bit hairy going out and in depending on the tide and swell. Boat is a good option to getting across river to fish oyster and frustration if you can't get out.
Maybe there is someone on this site who lives up there and they can give you some advice when leaving the river.
Also make sure you log on with Kalbarri sea rescue.

Count the sets.
The way to do it is to count the waves in each set and head out during the lull between sets.(you can watch the swells while you are launching and getting set up)
On the way in sit on the back of a wave and stay ahead of the one behind.( too fast and you can go over the lip, not too slow or you will drop back into the trough)
The other thing to watch is whether there is backwash off oyster reef as it can come diagonally across the swell and they stand right up.
If you have a good look it will be sweet.

Have a look at this
Posted this up here a while back, how to get in and out of the river. Not hard. Scroll through towards the end of the thread to get all the Kalbarri launching info as well. And be warned , the river has started running today. IF the flood is not strong, it just means dirty water, troll around the edge of it for mackerel, or anchor inside Oyster reef for mulloway. If it is strong enough, they will close the ramps and the mouth, but it has to be pretty big for that.

Thanks for the info on the river.
Just took a look at the live cam on the Kalbarri rescue web site, looks like it's really been stirred up with the rain. Not sure how the fishing goes with it like that but still heading up and will give it a crack.
14 and 16 year olds are keen as to get some fish.

The river looked like
The river looked like chocolate on Thursday........Its coming down reasonably quick but I think its only from localised rains as the river was still rising up near Coolcalalya apparently. We watched a bloke in a yak in the mouth paddling like fuck trying to go upstream and nearly got washed out.....be careful
Cheers

Fish the edge of the dirty water outside
Mackerel should be about by now, hopefully.
