Just want to catch something big!
Submitted by garethgkr on Wed, 2010-01-06 00:38
Im a 16 yr old kid that follows his uncles on fishing trips usually to North Mole. My dad isn't interested in fishing so I depend on my uncles.
Im tired of fishing herrings, yellowtails, chopper tailors... and just want to get something big(to de-stress before TEE arrives)
Tried going after stingrays at North Mole and Woodies, but no luck.
Toughest rod I have is a 12ft surf with 25lb line.
Im desperate!! hahaha
Any sugestions to where(south of the river) and what I should do?
Thanks alot!!

It just takes patience gareth
And big baits help if you want to catch bigger fish. And burley is essential.

Next time
Next time your fishing just put a big hook through one of the herring or choppers you catch and throw it back out.
Might take a few goes but eventually you'll hook up!
Gotta be fish'n for someth'n big to catch it (most of the time anyway)

how big of a hook is a big? ive got like a 2 4/0 hooks tied on the same line but 7 cm apart, with a running sinker. Tried using herrings but I think crabs love to demolish them..

I would but...
I can afford to go.. but asian parents arent the best when it comes to spending $200 on some fishing trip and letting their son go on a boat full of strangers. Haha. Tried getting a couple of my mates to go but they get sea sick...

When i was your age and didnt have much cash, no boat, but wanted to catch something big I would go for rays, I bought a 150pound handline for like 10 bux and would fish evenings and nights and burley hard (use the herring/yellowtail heads and sleletons for burley or mashed mulies). Rays would usually show up and what a rush it was when you get a hook up. the hooks would often bend straight if we hooked big ones but sometimes we would land smaller and medium sized ones.

never had to burley for them
they just cruze along in front of the jetty just wait till you see one and chuck your bait in front and hang on

Burley always helps
And rays love fish heads. So if you want to catch a big one get the head off a mullet or tailor and throw that out on the end of your line.

Put one big hook through its eyes
The fish head will also stop pickers stealing your baits.

distance from shore helps
distance from shore helps with sharks.
Not many people believe it, but sharks wont come right in close very often (close i mean within 10-20metres.
so need to be casting out as far as possible to obtain better chances.
Change from a runnign sinker to a star sinker with a 3way swivel. Attach once leader to your sinker then to one point on the 3way, then another leader slightly shorter (maybe 25cms) in length to the other end of the 3 way and to your hooks. 4o gangs will do the trick for most beach fishing.
a fillet of herring might also help, instead of a whole herring.

200lb
200lb you may as well be using rope, a 50 ound leader will suffice unless youre catching 60 kilo sharks, the most important thing is to put in the hours and and be patient and go at night time, heaps of peaple go to ammo jetty and just stay their all day and get a couple good rays, you just gotta be lucky

Oh.
never knew 1 big hook through the eyes would be sufficient. Head is pretty big, lol. Ive always though it needed 2-3 hooks on baits. When you say fillet of herring on a 4/0 gang, how exactly do you get it to stay on it? Coz each time I bait mullies on gangs and on a running sinker every 10mins i reel up baits gone.
Im gonna try use wire trace as leader, if its ok or is mono still better?
Hard to get the hours when I'm stuck with no transport out. Uncles only care bout catching bread and butter fish. Quantity..not quality.

Awful trip.
Arrived North Mole around 8.30, and the place was packed! So we decided to go to the tip of the light house. And was casting out unweighted mullies. In the 1st 5 minutes my mates got their lines snagged on those buoys which I think has nets under them. (whats with them?) Re-did their rigs and they casted out again. This isn't an easy spot to cast for people on our right were casting over our lines. And yet they complained when they catch our line. Tailor was firing but we were to busy having to tie our rigs again coz we got snagged on those buoys again.... After 2 hours I got my 1st bite... and the guy on our right caught my line reeled in and both our hooks were tangled up with my fish there. He took the fish and kept it! And Cut my line off and threw it in to the ocean... WTH? Lost another rig. Tied another rig, after 15 mins got another bite. Brought it in, it was about 49cm give or take a cm. Getting bored I tied a paternoster rig and cast it with a mullie on it. And yet again it got snagged. Hate this spot!
Now this is what ticks me off. On the right of me were a line of asians probably vietnamese and they were catching heaps and I bet they had atleast 20+ tailor per person in they buckets. The guy next to me had like 40.... Not being racist here... but being a fellow asian this really ticks me off... This wankers... are over fishing and in 10 years time when I want to take my kids out to fish. We would be catching blowies...
If the fisheries department dude was there I would be damn happy. Fine those buggers 10 grand each.

you get that
the place is rather popular after all. id usually just move away. or have a "friendly" chat with them
anyway only recently started myself but i reckon north mole itself has no "best spot". i personally (and pretty much everyone else) like the north facing side, that way the wind doesn't blow your casts short onto the rocks in front of you. but yeah stay away from those nets. they're lethal to your wallet and catch
if you don't mind the "company" north mole's a great place. used to go with my dad when i was younger. southern side can be nasty with the wind but shouldn't be too bad with a good weight and/or float and is far less populated than the northern wall
