It's official...The Mackerels Islands are Closing their doors

Heard it from 2 sources now...end of June is the last week for the mackerel Islands...seems the mining boys have aquired the lease of the island...no more fishing from Thevenard Island

Sad Times eh!!

that sux for those that fish the area. does this mean you are not allowed near the island in a boat or just fish from its shores

Anyone who thinks their booked in after that might want to get on the phone

Not too sure about the mining bit

Thu, 2012-05-10 17:35

I was talking to phil from compleate angler on tuesday (he went up there wednesday) and I mentioned this, He was saying chevron are pulling the pin have to take all there infastructure with them this include the power water etc even the runway has to be removed so unless the mining companies are going to replace all that the camp cant function

so will have to go

Chevron will close down

Thu, 2012-05-10 17:43

Chevron will close down Thevenard Island when Gorgon kicks off it's gas plant which I thought was at least next year or 2014. The camp for the mackeral islands gets power and water from TVI but I thought that Chevron would keep on going whilst it was demolishing/moth balling the plant and assets but maybe plans have changed.

I'm not sure of the exact agreement but from what I've heard the Mackerel Islands rely on Chevron for power and water so when TVI shuts down so does the Mackerels... I would have thought they would be able to keep operating for a while longer though as it's going to take quite a while to decommission the island but obviously not which is unfortunate.

I remember when we did trips

Fri, 2012-05-11 19:29

I remember when we did trips up there years ago that calm was very strict on the enviromental impact even fag butts. I would say it would be in their contract that it would have to be left as clean as when they moved in so absolutely nothing left. My bet is it'll be turned into a marine sancturary so that'll be the end of the fun. Sad days for such a top destination. Anyone remember cranky Bernie?

has anyone been given a reason

Sun, 2012-05-13 18:49

has anyone been given a reason for the closure, i know people are saying when tvi (i think it is) pull out their power plant etc the place will have to close not having been there is there a gas production facility on the island or what do chevron and tvi do on the island. is it a calm directed thing or another gov authority driven thing . If anyone can clarify what and why it would be appreciated

Drew

Sun, 2012-05-13 20:06

Drew informed me that the directors of the island have decided on a temorary closure due to the business becoming unviable as a result of the current circumstances in Onslow. Apparently bookings are way down and the island is having trouble recieving services from the mainland- everyone is too busy looking after wheatstone. He knew nothing about some of the rumours talked about in this thread.

Not sure whether there is more to it than what we have been told- only recieved a phone call to cancel, no formal correspondance even though i have asked for it. My bet is the resort will be housing workers within 6 months.

i think you are right on the money!

Sun, 2012-05-13 20:18

my bet is that with the land shortage in Onslow and that there needs to be a huge amount of accomidation for workers on the wheatstone project chevron have decided to build accomidation for the wheatstone project on thevenard, it is only a hop skip and a jump from Onslow no town councils to put a stick in the spokes of accomidation projects and all the workers there can be controled so far as their drinking habits go. There is already a strip on the island for flying in and out.

To me it looks all to sweet for chevron not to take advantage of and after construction of wheatstone all can go back to normal
