Out of interest whats the go then with hiring houseboats to putt around in e.g Walpole? Their motor is bigger than 6hp but you dont need an RST to hire one say for the weekend???

Yeah i know the RST rules for recreational boating but for the houseboats you dont need one. Thats what Madurah, Blackwood, Walpole and Abany houseboats told us when we were enquiring last summer for a houseboat weekend trip at one of the locations. All of them told us we only required to have a car licence and a bit of a familiarisation when you get the boat. Because it would be strange if they could only hire them to people with RST as most the people who hire them arent boaties so wouldnt have RST. Maybe they have an exemption because even with motoring full steam they are atill slow?

eg

http://www.houseboatholiday.com.au/Fleet.htm

"Each houseboat is luxuriously appointed with all the comforts of home plus an upper deck for outdoor entertaining & relaxation.
In addition, a 4m dinghy with 15hp motor is provided to enhance the adventure and allow easy access to the unique and tranquil waterways of the Frankland and Deep Rivers.

On boarding your houseboat, you will be given "hands on" instruction in order to familiarise you with all you need to know regarding its handling and all other necessary procedures.  A Recreational Skippers Ticket is an advantage,
but a current valid motor vehicle drivers license is all that is required."
