iPhone GPS apps.

Hypothetically, if someone was on your boat with an iphone that has a GPS app installed (Navionics/Navman etc), is it possible that the phone has recorded the days' travel even if it isnt 'illuminated' ie, phone is locked and placed on the dash but still on?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Daisy

Interesting question.

If he didn't have a power cord plugged into it? Then absolutely not. The battery life with gps running is probably only an hour or so.

If you had one, set tracks on, then let the screen go dark, or locked it, you could probably track for awhile, maybe all day if you had it plugged in.

Just did a little poking around on google to back that projected 1hr up.

A guy says 2hr 5min on a brand new iphone4 with all other apps disabled. I had a 3GS that was getting on a bit and anything more than an hour is probably lucky.

 Just with the battery issue

Just with the battery issue you can get bigger longer runtime batteries that dont look much bigger than the normal ones and they in my case extended to well over double my battery life!

... sure you weren't stopping

... sure you weren't stopping it and starting it? Seems a bit weird you can get three times what most people can manage.

big battery drainer Damo, as soon as it locks it won't keep the track and i'd imagine if it did this would suck the life out of it even more, once opened again you'd probably just get a straight line from last reference to the new one.

Disagree guys

Mon, 2011-08-22 21:12

I used it for 12 months as my gps, been out behind rotto and back quite a few times and I also use it when I am landbased to mark spots on the beach of interest. I also use it in the car for the road map function if I need it. I don't know what gps app you guys are using but navionics lasted long time. Just checked then and the app seems to back up and running now. Handy backup if the main gps dies at sea

where you saving a track

Tue, 2011-08-23 09:16

where you saving a track though? i've never used the track function but if you're constantly going back to your phone to update your location i know my battery doesn't last long, doesn't help it's an original iphone so the battery is on it's last legs. If you where recording your track did it save when your phone was locked assuming you used Navionics.

A mate uses MotionX GPS that records your track even when locked but same deal with battery life.

Track

Tue, 2011-08-23 12:46

Yep saving a track, and that's about all they are good for along with navigating reefs etc. Obviously I only unlocked the screen when looking at it to conserve batt power and the rest of the time had it locked. And it will still save the track when locked. Usually I wouldn't stop the track so it would show where I went all the way and onto the trailor and back to my place.
I deckie on another boat occasionally and consider it bad form/karma to steal someone's spots who is good enough to take you fishing for the day. If you can't trust the deckie then there are plenty more out there
