how hard is it for fisheries to patrol the most popular pier?

I took a walk along the ammo jetty on saturday night, there was quite easily well over 100 people fishing there. What i found concerning was there were a few asians fishing there with a cast net which i am certain is not legal. even more concerning was the size of there crate they intended to fill and were doing a good job of it working like little machines. the minute i mentioned the fisheries i got a look of disgust from them, there crate was an industrial sized container i would of loved to kick it over into the sea, but i didnt fancy i stab wound. so my bitch today is what waste of time our license fees are if they cannot be bothered patrolling  areas these scum buckets fish? Ps i have many asian friends who do the right thing, id love for fisheries to not only fine them but confiscate there cars.

Racist! You're a racist mate!

Racist! You're a racist mate! There's no need for this racism! You used the word asian.........Ohh shit here we go.....You can use a cast net outside of a marina or estuary if you have the appropriate licence. You and I are one of many that have formed the same opinions on certain people due to what we have seen with out own eyes. Been discussed a little bit lately, dont be suprised to see this thread deleted

have the fisheries ever

Wed, 2013-02-13 20:50

have the fisheries ever actually been to ammo jetty? everytime i'm down there it's the exact same so i can't imagine they have an excuse of- we can't patrol everywhere at once - casue they'd only have to go there once.

 Cast netting there is

Wed, 2013-02-13 20:59

Cast netting there is totally legal.  (so a quick check on the fisheries web site would have stopped you from making a wrong assumption here   )  What is questionable is whether they have a license for it.

What fish were they collecting ???

If its scalies/baitfish then from memory there is a limit of 9l.  (I am sure there are many poeple here that have colleced more than a 9l buckets worth when they are stocking up for their trips up north).

How many of them have a netting license? did you find out or are you just assuming they did not.  Only people who assist with a net and individually hold recreational netting licences may take up to their

daily bag limit from the net.

Maybe you should elaborate a bit more.

Talk about Assumptions

Wed, 2013-02-13 21:22

You should check and not make assumptions before you quote from memory. Scaly mackeral, Whitebait, Anchovies and Hardyheads had no bag bag limit before Feb this year.

So (I am sure there are many poeple here that have colleced more than a 9l buckets worth when they are stocking up for their trips up north). Is an assumption that is not correct, and those people you mentioned have done nothing wrong if it was before the new feb rules.

How did your unknown flatties taste Michael ?

 My so called assumptions

Thu, 2013-02-14 06:55

My so called assumptions were referenced from the current manuals (and checked on web site before replying).  And being posted on 13th, it most likely happened on the weekend past so in the legal limits.

Industrial sized container ????? how long is a piece of string or whats a "piecost".  Not very specific you must admit.  It could be a 2l icecream container based on his emotional comments.  100 people on that jetty would be almost overflowing no doubt.  Most likely more like 50 I would hazard a guess.  And put in there the so called industiral sized container - what did they drive it there with a forklift or something ().  Maybe a bit more facts needs to be included in the initial post so people can make a more objective comment.

I do agree, taking that many is a bit excessive, but there was no mention how many were with the party of netters, too many unknown factors again for people to comment on.

Oh yes the flatties did taste nice.  If you noticed the emicon after that line you can see it was a bit of a "lol".  We know how prescious people are when one posts an unknown fish that they did not return.

Its all good

Thu, 2013-02-14 11:56

Its all good Michael, i was talking about your mention of people loading up before heading up north on trips rather than the incedent on the jetty. I probaly over reacted but with netting being discussed on quite a few threads lately it would be nice to see a bit of research done before comments are made. ( i know you did . )

At the end of the day i think its just sad that because of the actions of some fisho's, we will see places like the Ammo jetty closed to the public for ever.

Bad planning

Wed, 2013-02-13 21:06

The Ammo jetty has been a poor plan from the begining. Reclaim the land, build a great fishing jetty and then build the car park 700m away out of site. No wonder fisheries dont go there, they would have to leave a security guard with their car or it would be destoyed or gone by the time they got back to it .

But yes i agree with you, all these local spots get hammered and it apears fisheries dont know how to police them .

As far as throw nets go, with a licence there are many metro areas you can use them, and i see nothing wrong with it as long as bag limits are in force. I use one all the time for mullet and a few other bait fish.

I think the Ammo jetty has not much time left and will be lost to all fisho's .

Wed, 2013-02-13 21:27

Yep it is legal to cast net there. I called fisheries a month ago to double check and spoke with a fisheries officer from the area.

Hmm

Wed, 2013-02-13 22:08

Where do I start, hmmm.

Questions: How do you know fisheries weren't there last night or the night before and everything was fine?

Questions: Why do you need to mention they were asian, why can't it just be, people were there doing the wrong thing taking too many?

I feel your frustration, nobody likes seeing our waters getting pillaged, but make sure you ring fishwatch and let them know otherwise griping on a fishing forum really isn't going to assist in solving the problem.

I dont see what the point

Thu, 2013-02-14 09:26

I dont see what the point is???   If they were Asian.... say they were asian....  If vietnamese, say vietnamese....  If Aussie..... say Aussie.. ffs.. this political correctness is a bloody joke!!!

Since when does it become rasiscm to state the general area somebody comes from??

I'm a true kelpie cross!!!   Aussie, Pom, Kiwi, English, Irish AND Portugese blood flows through my veins...  but if someone calls me an aussie....  do you honestly think Ill get upset and start screaming rasiscm??

I honestly think this is going a bit to far...

And 1 other point I'd like to make.......    I use tuff tackle reels!!!!

(geez Im in for it now)

But seriously... If we are going to go down this road...  You would have to change a LOT of things...

No longer go out for chinese food.. or Italian pasta, Greek cheese, or what ever...  Whats the difference between saying Asians were catching undersize fish... and going out to a chinese restaurant??

It's not political

Thu, 2013-02-14 11:02

It's not political correctness ..the ethnicity of the alleged persons isn't the problem ..it's the insulting overtones of slur on the whole race that typically follows on forums , that is the problem IMO..

hmm maybe im just old and

Thu, 2013-02-14 21:05

hmm maybe im just old and grumpy, happy tocstand corrected if they are the rules and they could legally fill there tub it just makes me angry to witness such unsustainable activity. many of my sort use to fill there boats whrn no limits were in place which destroyed the fishery for the next generation. i lived in many cities and seen quite alot of poor form from all races and all walks of life ill stand by what i have said in my first post and that is i have rarelly seen fisheries patrol areas that these characters fish.
