few home made poppers and stuff. all hand carved out of jarrah and tassie oak. just showin them off cos im pretty proud of em. squid jig was a pretty huge effort aha. poppers kill it on tailor and little ones on whiting but keen to get to monties to test the bigguns on GT,s and trout. couple of interesting ones in there too, keen to test on some coralies.
Cheers

they are awesome. great
they are awesome.
great effort there.
just curious ...are the poppers wired through the body ? and if they are do you drill them or ???
seriously ....pulling in something decent on a home made popper would be the best !

thanks mate, yeah internally
thanks mate, yeah internally wired so it means drilling through and when youre talking about a 25 cm hole that you have to join up half way with a 3mm bit it gets tricky. after some practice its cool but accidentally destroying something that took an hour and a half to make with a stray, offline hole, it hurts but you get used to it. basically just eying off the line after every mm of drilling.

What about drilling first?
What about drilling the hole before you carve, then if you stuff up the wire hole, you haven't wasted the carving time?
I have made heaps of home made poppers over the years and they have accounted for macks, barracuda, and plenty of GT's, up to as big as 20kg. I didn't wire through - just drilled a 20mm deep hole and araldited in a loop twisted from heavy single strand wire to create the hook and towing loops. The poppers are mostly softwood too, and weighted with ball sinkers (araldited into the body) so they sit upright and slightly face up/tail down if that makes sense. If you take care with the aralditing, they will stand up to a lot of punishment and the wallet doesn't hurt much when you lose them to unstoppables.

yeah mate i do exactly that
yeah ive thought about it but because theres so much shape in them and im coming out of such a fine point on the end i couldnt get the hole in the right spot before carving. about the wiring, i do exactly that with the whiting poppers where i know there is no real pressure going on them but on the bigger ones i prefer to wire all the way through. and like i said ive made quite a few now and i very rarely destroy them anymore so its all good. Also, the heaviest single strand ive found is 150 lb which is obviously strong but too thin and im worried about the bend kinking, getting fatigued and snapping. thanks for the input mate

If your career as a lure maker never takes off...
At least you know you can fall back as an Elizabethan sex toy maker!
Seriously though, great work with the carving finish and designs. How much does a big Jarrah Popper like that one weigh?
